In this third miniseries installment, in which its star also executive produces, another murder mystery finds its way to her desk. This time around, Chronicle Mysteries: Vines that Bind take us to Pennsylvania wine country.

Chronicle Mysteries: Vines that Bind (2019) Hallmark Movies and Mysteries Review

Alex McPherson (Alison Sweeney) is about to investigate her next murder for her podcast, Recovered. This time the tip comes from her day job, Chronicle co-worker, Valerie (Rebecca Staab). The death of a man whose family she has known for some time doesn’t set well with his eldest son. Thanks to Valerie, they ask Alex to investigate the death, which police rule an accident. Or so Alex believes.

Come to find out, upon her arrival at the winery, she learns no one save for the eldest son is really interested in Alex investigating what may very well have been a murder.

Unlike the second film (‘The Wrong Man’) in this series, most of the premiere movie’s characters return in this third and final (for now anyway) Chronicle Mysteries installment. Drew and Chuck, Kendell (Drew’s college-age daughter), and of course, Valerie are all back as is Alex’s uncle. Sadly, the one thing missing in this one is the cute banter between Alex and the local fireman, Sean. This is because the man is only in one frame! Like, why is this I wonder; I quite like him.

‘Vines That Bind’ mixes things up by sending everyone on a bit of a road trip because where Alex goes, eventually her fellow reporters will follow. This makes for a fun experience, and “shakes up” the usual crime-solving methods. Of course, this wouldn’t be a good mystery if there wasn’t a close call or two, and Alex certainly gets herself into a scrape or two. The killer is easy to peg, or I thought so, but this doesn’t take away from the entertainment value.

If you like the first two films in this limited series, don’t miss Chronicle Mysteries: Vines that Bind. It’s a wonderful way to end the series. Or at least a way to end it for now. There’s that romance tease by the end, so we may not have seen the last of Alex and Co.
