For Cate (Jodie Sweetin), the family founded and operated Merry and Bright candy cane company is what’s most important. It may not have been in her original plans, but now that her grandmother is no longer here to protect its values, Cate takes on the legacy and the task of keeping the traditions she started moving forward.
Things are slow and a bit tight this year which is where professional consultant, Gage (Andrew Walker) steps in. Sent to try and find ways to reinvent the company, Gabe brings with him an investor that could fix all of the company’s dire financials, even with Cate’s optimism and the tenuous partnership she and Gabe develop, this new deal may not be the answer she needs…
Merry and Bright (2019) Hallmark Review
Another sweet little romance plays out in Merry and Bright. It’s got all the right stuff to endear it as a holiday treat meant to be enjoyed. There’s a candy factory, a romance and of course, an excess of holiday décor. Plus, like anything from the TV network, there’s the familiar faces many like “know and trust” as fan favorites.
There’s the common trope of a scrooge character, along with a this-isn’t-going-to-end-well-pre-breakup plot, all of which manage to find their way out of potential disaster in a perfectly good fashion. If the cheerfulness of the plot doesn’t, the fact that candy canes appear frequently will certainly put you in mind of the season, and one of the most fun subplots is seeing Cate’s baking, and the unique creative candies she makes.
As Cate’s mother, Sharon Lawrence also co-stars, who you might recognize from TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles. Of course, Jodie Sweetin is from Full House fame along with last year’s Entertaining Christmas, and Andrew Walker is a frequent Christmas movie leading man (everything from Snowed Inn-Christmas on Lifetime too).
The “last chapter” end of this movie wraps everything up as sweetly as the candy the movie celebrates, and for those of us who appreciate a happy conclusion, that’s the most important part.
