‘In the Key of Love’: Musical Sweethearts Reunite

Sometimes a fan favorite network like Hallmark will add a fun surprise to their schedule. One of these was the network arrival of In the Key of Love.

In the Key of Love (2019) Hallmark Review

Working as a photographer at her grandmother’s event business, Maggie Case (Laura Osnes) is finally whole again. Once part of a music duo, Maggie not only lost her zest for music, she also loses her heart when she and her partner – in work, and life, call it quits.

Jake Colby (Scott Michael Foster) is working on his first big record as producer. Hoping this job will open doors for him, he wraps the work just in time to leave for his sister’s wedding. The one event he isn’t expecting is a reunion with the girl he once loved.

Originally part of the 2019 Hallmark ‘June Weddings,’ this romantic-comedy then debuted on their exclusive streaming network, Hallmark Movies Now. Now it makes an appearance on the channel it originally was supposed to, and I can say, it’s a romance worth the wait. Set on a West coast island, the scenery is pretty to look at, and we get to see much of this as we traverse around with the characters during their many wedding activities.

New faces to Hallmark, both actors do sing, as their character do, something which always lends cred to those characters. Laura is a Broadway star, and then went on to co-star in a Hallmark Christmas original as well. There’s a sweet relationship between Jake and Maggie, though I’ve seen actors together whom I like better in terms of chemistry “sparks.” Nonetheless I do always root for these two to work things out; theirs is a relationship easy to champion, and find genuine because of the past. You’ll also recognize Andrea Brooks as the bride.

This script takes the story to new heights with unusual endings (not that I mind) or perhaps more accurately, new beginnings. For those of us looking for a sweet movie to unwind with and enjoy, it should come as no surprise that this network comes through again. In the Key of Love strikes all the right notes.
