‘USS Christmas’: An American Romance from Hallmark

Some of the movies Hallmark produces have a beautiful human angle that also takes the time to give a nod to the people protecting this land of freedom.

USS Christmas (2020) Hallmark TV Film Review

Writing stories with scandal is not what Maddie Contino (Jen Lilley) wants to be doing. But at the paper where she works, these are the stories she’s assigned. When her sister, a proud Navy pilot asks her to join the Christmas tiger cruise, Maddie says no and then, reluctantly, agrees. Joining the annual traditional cruise that allows families to be onboard the four-day trip, Maddie appreciates not just what her father scarified and her sister does, but she also stumbles across a journal that recounts a love story.

Reluctantly helping her track down clues is Lt. Billy Jenkins (Trevor Donovan). The son of the ship’s captain, Billy isn’t happy to be joining a guest on her potential story, but the more time they spend together, the more he realizes just what his Grinch like attitude misses during Christmas.

Each year I always hold back a few films I anticipate I’ll enjoy until Christmas day or at the very least, Christmas week. USS Christmas is one of them. While I’m not sure it’s quite as dynamic as I’d set it up to be, it’s still a lovely story that features solid acting.  We see Jen Lilley again in a film that suits her; and of course, Trevor Donovan is a familiar face too. (You’ll see him in Hallmark’s Two For the Win next.)

Their connection is solid and is definitely one of those angsty kind of love stories; the kind that makes us desperate to see these two get their happy end. The script also deals in a few more “life” moments because of Maddie’s very real emotions regarding Billy’s career. Still in spite of this, and the bittersweet feels it makes, I appreciate that the writer’s don’t magically erase these fears. The scenes between Maddie and her mother are fabulous as well.

In the end, USS Christmas is an emotional, American story that displays bravery, honor and best of all a love story we hope will overcome.

Content: nothing to note, I count this a “clean romance.”
