‘Jumanji: The Next Level’ is One Funny Follow Up

Sequels seem to, generally, be something fans don’t like as well as the first movie. More often than not I’m the girl who likes them as well, if not better than movie one. It’s been a while since I saw the Jumanji re-make, but when finally I watched ‘The Next Level,’ I hoped for a good time.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) Film Review

Life has moved on as if the Jumanji experience never happened for four misfit highschoolers. Now, all done with senior year, and onto the next chapter of their lives, everyone is excited to see each other again over winter break. Everyone, that is, except Spencer (Alex Wolff). Torn between wanting to see his friends Bethany and Fridge (Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain) and uncertain he wants to see his girlfriend, Martha (Morgan Turner), with whom he’s “taking a break,” Spencer wants to recapture some of the bravery he feels as his Jumanji gaming character, Bravestone. This prompts him to revisit the game, something the four pledged to never (EVER!) again touch.

When his friends realize Spencer went back in (what is he thinking??), they too go back to the crazy place. Only this time, some of their alter ego gaming characters – Ruby (Karen Gillan), Dr. Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Professor Oberon (Jack Black) and (Kevin Hart), aren’t exactly as they remember them.

This film is big on nearly everything. From the adventure to excitement, laughs and cast, it doesn’t do anything in a “small” way. This is part of what makes the experience so dang fun, and let me tell you, this one is fun. It’s not long into this one that I’m grinning and laughing ridiculously because the movie is just that entertaining. Plus, I’m always glad to see what characters we’ve already met are up to.

These characters are all so fun to hang out with. Making it more fun this time around is the way the bodies switch up and the way new characters go along for the ride. We also see Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, and Awkwafina join the cast, and a brief return of Colin Hanks, too. All in all, it’s great to see everyone return along with the new faces who help to make this (if possible) more fun.

If you enjoy adventure stories or the 2017 re-boot (‘Welcome to the Jungle’), you’re certain to like Jumanji: The Next Level. There’s good characters and cast, fun plotting and even better, an adventure not to miss out on!

Content: Still PG-13, this film is less on the crude jokes than its predecessor with only minor instances, though there’s still profanity (including abuse of deity) and some crude comments. There’s also plenty of “tense” moments if that’s not your thing.

I really enjoyed the first one, too, Molly! So silly, but yes, all kinds of fun. Let me know what you think of this one. :)

This was definitely an instance where the sequel lived up to the first! So much fun!
