THREE OF THE BEST JOANNA & BILLY ‘BURDEN OF TRUTH’ MOMENTS (OTP FAVORITES!)

If there’s one thing I like to do, it’s writing new installments in “series” I’ve started here. If there’s one thing I don’t consistently do, its write these new additions. Today however we change this with a new feature in our OTP Favorites. This time we spotlight the underrated (show and couple) Burden of Truth OTP favorite Joanna and Billy.

BEWARE, Spoilers are ahead

This is a Canadian show that has aired three of its four seasons in the U.S. (on the CW), and much to my surprise, has managed to craft a full and beautiful romance in only one season. The first two dance around our lead couple, which in this case is a very good thing considering how damaged these two are. That said, at the end of season two there’s a choice made and in that choice, a great romance begins. The show, in a big picture way, follows Joanna Henley, a driven and emotionless corporate attorney. Her life is fine until she continues to be drawn back to a place she once lived but left under mysterious circumstances years ago. It’s here that she reconnects with an old school friend, Billy Crawford. The rest, as they say, is history. burden of truth otp favorite joanna and billy

As this is a couple I do not see much of, today I’m sharing three of their best moments, small since, as I say, their romance has only been a thing for one season. But so long as the writer’s don’t ruin it, I’m here for more between these two.

Being Loved. Finally.

Season Two, Episode 8 ‘The Right Road’

This is the genesis of the romance between Joanna Chang and Billy Crawford. Sure they share some “looks” prior to this, but at the end of season two, Joanna receives a dynamic professional offer that means she must move to Singapore. But as she’s at the airport, she calls Billy to tell him that the reason she always runs is because she’s never truly been loved. As a result of this, she asks if he thought about asking her to stay. He responds that there’s no way he could “compete” with Singapore.

As they continue to talk, we see Joanna reflected in the glass of Billy’s bookcase. The pair lock eyes before the season ends, and while we don’t know for certain how their story ends (at that point), we feel confident, knowing Billy, that Joanna has finally found someone who loves her without condition.

‘Wherever You Go…’

Season Three, Episode 2 ‘Wherever You Go’

This is one of those moments that brings tears to the viewers eyes. Not perhaps if you’re not a romantic or if Biblical stories don’t hold meaning to you, but this moment between these two is magic. The pair is sitting on the lake, Joanna keeping a secret she doesn’t know how to tell Billy, all as the pair struggles with a case, when he, most sincerely assures her he’s there no matter what. This after Billy tells her there she goes with those “ghosts” again, and she responds, “I can’t slay them without you, Billy.” burden of truth otp favorite joanna and billy

He proceeds to recount that he’s not much for bible stories, but one that also stuck with his was Ruth because in that story lies a true bond that he will follow “wherever you go” referring to wanting to always be with Joanna, no matter the hardships.

“Wherever you go, I will go. Where you lodge, I will lodge. And where you die, I will die. And there will I be buried.’”

Through the Good… and Bad Times!

Season Three, Episode 7 ‘Name Your Ghosts’

This may be an odd add-on to include here, but it’s so dynamic that I have to include it. It’s not romantic in the traditional sense, but I am SO proud of Billy in this moment. It begins as the pair is driving home, Joanna becomes car sick, and after they pull over, she pulls herself together and says it’s time to go. This is her being her usual closed off self, and expecting the man who sincerely loves her to just do as she says.

Instead, Billy, in a rare action towards Joanna, raises his voice, tells her no, stands his ground and with emotion, insists they’re going to have this out. Both admit that they’re scared to death of being parents; Joanna especially doesn’t know how to be a mother, and she fears she won’t be able to raise this child. But… they get the words out there, and after this, they’re stronger. burden of truth otp favorite joanna and billy

Joanna, always in control wants to (solo) figure this out. But not letting her get away with anything, Billy says:

I DON’T WANT YOU TO FIGURE IT OUT! I wanna figure it out with you. Joanna, I don’t have the answers either but if they exist, at all, then I don’t wanna find them without you.

– Burden of Truth

In response Joanna asks what they’re going to do, and much calmer, he tells her, “it’s so nice to hear you say that.” It’s an intense, but beautiful moment between these two, and sets up a better way as they move forward in this season.

There’s an end to this OTP favorites installment. As I previously said, this is a new romance and so there’s room for lots of error still. But thus far, I’m impressed with how writers handle everything – and so far, this is a beautiful romance. Plus, as a bonus, we get a secondary one that’s pretty lovely too. (It’s also not a romantic show in general so these moments are rare.) Have you seen Burden of Proof? Do you like it or dislike it?
