LIKE IT’S HARD? THREE REASONS WHY WE LOVE ‘LEGALLY BLONDE’ (CAN’T & WON’T STOP!)

by

OK, so here’s the thing. In all likelihood I should have collected the more professional side of my brain, sat down, put in the research and, oh, I don’t know, curated a list of late summer reads. Or something. However, as I’m LAZY when it comes to putting in that extra bit required for certain things, today I’m going on REPEAT for what we already had fun with this week. Of course, I’m speaking of the 20th anniversary of Legally Blonde (also, WHY didn’t this ever become a more exciting thing??). Before this week closes out, I want to celebrate it again with a little three things I love about Legally Blonde.

As one of my most favorite movies, I feel it’s kind of a duty to celebrate this all about pink comedy. Plus, earlier this week, I shared a pair of quizzes to celebrate rather than a kind of list of why I like this one. So… you know, it’s different. Real quick, the plot follows a California girl who is the kind of stereotypical blond, only when her boyfriend dumps her (for this reason), she decides to win him back by getting into the same law school he’s about to attend.

If you don’t think this one is fun, I’m not sure we can be friends (kidding) but still, I hope to make a case for why this one is cute.

THREE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT LEGALLY BLONDE

1: ELLE WOODS

I mean, I feel as though this reason is pretty DANG obvious! Reese Witherspoon’s Elle is pretty cool and memorable. She’s got that likable quality and despite Elle’s “stereotype,” she doesn’t let anyone get the best of her (ultimately).

2: QUOTABLES AND ZINGERS

There’s so much to love about this film and honestly, I probably should continue to build a list. However, one of those is the quotables and to go with this, the zingers, too! Elle initially lets some of her peers get the better of her (because they assume she’s worthless), however she keeps her chin up, gets in a some zingers, yes, but also shows kindness even to those who are unkind to her.

3: WANT YOU BACK, MAYBE?

This determination to attend Harvard Law starts as one motive for Elle, only to end up another. I’m not about feminism (at least not in the way we’re preached at is the “only” way), however, I can appreciate that Elle realizes she should try her hardest. She may start out with a kind of carefree (as the infamous quote goes) “what? Like it’s hard?” attitude. However, she comes to value work and put in the work to do what her best is. I admire this and think that the film has a good message as a result.

BONUS! PINK

I’m not someone who wears pink all the time, nor do I think I could pull it off, but hey, if there’s one thing we all can say, it’s that Elle does this with confidence. For that, the girl deserves a little shout-out.
