LIST | THE THREE LOVE STORIES OF ‘CHESAPEAKE SHORES’ (OTP TV FAVORITES!)
7 OF THE BEST MOMENTS IN ANNE AND GILBERT’S ROMANCE (OTP FAVORITE) #ANNEANDGILBERT #ANNEOFGREENGABLES #GOODMOVIES #ROMANCE #ROMANCENERD #PERIODDRAMA #ROMANTICSCENE Share on XIt’s been a long time since I watched the beloved and beautiful 80s adaptations of this story. However, I’ve seen them multiple times throughout the years and these two always make an impression. Normally I’d do a kind of introduction of our couple. However, I don’t think these two need one, right? From the moment Gil first tugs on the new student’s red braid and calls her “carrots,” to the conclusion of their story, it’s beautiful on screen. I cannot attest to the novels as I don’t think I’ve read – I know – them, but here it’s memorable to say the least.
Let’s have a closer look at the best moments in this couple’s relationship.
OTP FAVORITE ANNE SHIRLEY AND GILBERT BLYTHE
1: MOMENTO from ANNE OF GREEN GABLES
After their run in at a dance (a kind of cute version of “flirting” during which Gil ignores Anne), he finds her dance card, and instead of returning it, he keeps him. Of course, this is because secretly he is in love with Anne.
2: A DANCE IN THE MEADOW & THEN A PROPOSAL from ANNE OF AVONLEA
This is certainly a bittersweet moment, but I think it’s also an excellent one because it shows us and allows us to see, not for the first time, how true and genuine and honest Gil’s feelings for his Carrot-top are. This scene is simple, but charming and honest. It’s yet another moment of truth of Gilbert’s feelings, which Anne just cannot accept. Later this leads to Gil proposing marriage to Anne. Sadly, she doesn’t feel the same (or rather is too afraid of the upset it would cause to their comfortable friendship) and emotional, she crushes him. otp favorite anne shirley and gilbert
I’ve loved you as long as I can remember
…Friends, huh? I thought we were kindred spirits.
3: DON’T FORGET ME from ANNE OF AVONLEA
Post proposal, Anne and Gil randomly run into one another on a fog covered lane as Anne reads her mail. They chat briefly as Gil catches Anne up on his education and engagement. He has a train to catch so the pair cannot talk long, but he leaves Anne with a note, hug and a lingering “don’t forget me” all of which tells us how much he still loves Anne with an e. After she reads the note which states simply, “congratulations on all your success, Carrots. From your old chum, Gilbert,” Anne runs to catch his train and barely catching his attention, she stands at the station with tears, waving and saying, thank you for the note.
This is perhaps, one of the first real moments for Anne realizing not just what Gil truly means to her, but perhaps that she does love him beyond just her childhood chum.
4: NO ONE BUT YOU from ANNE OF AVONLEA
After Anne hears Gilbert is terribly ill, she goes to see him at his bedside, bringing with her the book she published. She tells him it’s an early wedding gift and he says there’s to be no wedding because there’s no one for him but Anne.
5: MARBLE HALLS from ANNE OF AVONLEA
Once Gil is better, he finds Anne picking apples as he strolls down the lane. Compared to last we saw him, he looks quite dapper and even has a sparkle in his eye, perhaps hopeful that he has a second chance in more ways than one. As the pair takes a leisurely stroll, Gil tells Anne that he has three years before medical school is done, and knowing what a romantic she is, he goes on to say even then there won’t be diamond sunbursts or marble halls. otp favorite anne shirley and gilbert
Having done some growing herself and now realizing the depth of her own feelings, Anne replies she doesn’t need or want that. What she does confess is “I just want you” as the two come together for a kiss.
6: REUNITED from ANNE: THE CONINTUING STORY
After time apart and away from one another, Anne and Gil reunite as she writes in her journal on the beach. It’s an exciting, fun and of course, extremely sweet moment when Anne spots Gil across the way watching her.
7: SWEETHEART from ANNE: THE CONTINUING STORY
Many people don’t care for the “Continuing Story,” which was made years after the sequel, Anne of Avonlea. I think it’s lovely. Not as “innocent,” but still, lovely. This story separates the pair for a lengthy period of time while Gil joins the war effort. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Anne goes to look for him when he’s presumed missing, and as she’s on stage singing the strains of let me call you sweetheart, Gil hears her voice and in the crowd, their eyes meet. They come together clinging to each other grateful for this emotional moment both were unsure they’d ever have.

I love this post! I feel like watching the movie today. I love Anne and Gilbert! I still have to read the book too, but I absolutely adore the first and second Anne movies.
You named pretty sweet moments – one of my favorites between the two is the ending of the first movie. Gilbert gives Anne his teaching post so she can be closer to Green Gables and he calls her “Carrots” in a near-whisper while caressing her face. I also liked when Gilbert gave Anne a standing ovation at the reading in the first movie too. Honestly, all their moments are great – they were always connected and it shined through so well in this series.
Thanks, Chanel! I have fun with these, but do always wonder, “am I the only one who likes this kind of thing!?” ;)
As always, I forget some of THE best moments, and you’re right! I did remember the “carrots” moment and I think I have that scene on an upcoming list, but did forget the standing ovation. That’s always a cute one, too! Either way, these two have so many good moments. How can we pick, right?! :D
