HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW (SO FAR): ‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS’ PLANS BIG NETFLIX RETURN
It’s been a long time in coming, but if you’re a fan of the adaptation Sweet Magnolias, then you might like to know that it’s set to return to our Netflix screens February 2022. This still seems a ways away, but actually it really isn’t that far from today. As this is one of those shows I loved in 2020 (and realize I never did post my review), I’m thrilled to finally have a date for the return of this feel-good, charming series with a focus on the ties of friendship. Today I’m ready to look at the “what we know: Sweet Magnolias” information that IS out there.

With that news (which broke yesterday), today we’re looking at the early impression of “what we know.” Of course, as this is early news, we don’t know much yet. I thought about saving this for our next Pop Culture edition, but decided it deserves its own post, with a quick shout-out in said pop culture publication. So, let’s chat about the return of Sweet Magnolias and its second season (finally!).
WHAT WE KNOW: SWEET MAGNOLIAS, SEASON TWO
1: THE FRIENDS ARE BACK
Our three main characters, Maddie, Helen and Dana are back! I’m pretty dang ready for this given the loose threads that hang in the balance at the end of the first season. Most notably will likely be the pickup of the terrible accident that maybe took a life at the finale of season one. It isn’t just a life that was in question, but also the “who” of the people in the car.
However, according to some places, I don’t see actors like Justin Bruening (who plays a love interest character I really like), Chris Klien (can do without his character), or some of the actors who play the kids of our three main characters. Do we think these characters will all be back or did we lose them?
HERE'S WHAT WE KNOW (SO FAR): ‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS’ PLANS BIG NETFLIX RETURN #SWEETMAGNOLIAS #NETFLIX #GOODTV #FEELGOODTV #ADAPTATION Share on XTVLine writes “Returning for Season 2 are JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend, Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue Sullivan, Heather Headley as Helen Decatur, Chris Klein as Bill Townsend, Jamie Lynn Spears as Noreen Fitzgibbons, Justin Bruening as Cal Maddox, Carson Rowland as Tyler Townsend, Logan Allen as Kyle Townsend, Anneliese Judge as Annie Sullivan, Brandon Quinn as Ronnie Sullivan and Dion Johnstone as Erik Whitley.”
So, maybe every is returning… or they’re just saying that to throw us off the truth!
2: NEW FACES ARE HERE TO STAY
While we may have lost main cast members, we will gain some new regulars. Though they appeared in varying forms of recurring roles, a while back, it was announced that co-stars Jamie Lynn Spears, Dion Johnstone and Brandon Quinn were promoted to series regulars for season two. I mean given that Brandon plays Dana’s ex, I’m not thrilled with this, and I’m pretty sure we did see Jamie and Dion in nearly every first season episode.
However there has been some controversy about Jamie Lynn Spears still being a part of the show. I suspect she is given that most likely the production is complete.
3: PROMOTIONAL PHOTOS
There are a few promotional photos floating around for season two. There’s one for each main cast member, and for Dana’s, she’s holding a bouquet of flowers. Now, what do you think, fellow fans? Is this simply a bouquet she’s picked for herself or is her potential romance with a certain man heating up?
4: THE STORIES TO TELL
Netflix dropped an official synopsis for the season, and it tells us some things without really telling us much. Needless to say, it sounds as though UPS and DOWNS will be in store. I just hope the storytelling can continue to be (overall) uplifting. This is part of what makes the show so dang charming. According to TV Addict, this is Netflix’s synopsis:
As Season 2 opens, Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue learn who is in the car. But that’s just the first of many surprises that come out of Prom Night — surprises that reshape relationships all over town. Friendships flounder.
Sounds a bit depressing, right? The synopsis does continue to say:
Old loves end and new loves begin.
Long-hidden secrets disrupt jobs, change lives, and shift the balance of power in Serenity. Everyone is affected.
In laughter and in loss, the Sweet Magnolias continue to fight for what is right for themselves and the people they love — even when those efforts come with a high price tag.
Will they find there are some problems not even Margarita Night can solve? Come pour it out and find out.
5: WHEN TO TUNE IN
As of now, Netflix has the show returning for its second run on February 4, 2022. So far away and yet not that much longer to wait. They’ll be ten episodes comprising the season, and the first episode title for season two is also rumored as being ‘Casseroles and Causalities.’
Your turn to sound off; are you excited about any of this? Are you hoping everyone is back? Who do you think dies in the cliffhanger car wreck!? One of Maddie’s kids? Someone you don’t expect? Annie? Do you think any of our main ladies will get a happy ending this season? Comment all the comments down below!
