‘JACKIE AND RYAN’: A LESS HAPPY & MORE EMOTIONAL ROMANCE

A film that I’ve been thinking about seeing for years, Jackie and Ryan (also known as Your Right Mind)is about what I assumed it’d be. However there is value to that.

Jackie and Ryan (2014) Film Review

Using the rails to travel, Rayan (Ben Barnes) is something of a modern day train hopper. It’s how he gets from point A to B. This time he’s stopping in small town Utah. There he meets up with a friend with whom he sits at street corners and plains guitar. He also makes time to see his other friend’s girl, only to be unable to get in touch with him. But he persists hoping to have Cowboy join him in what could result in a possible music opportunity none of them have had before.

While making this stop, Ryan also meets Jackie (Katherine Heigl). A newly separated woman, Jackie is back in her hometown with her daughter, and struggling badly over custody and divorce proceedings with a difficult ex. The two find they may share a connection but sometimes life pulls people in different directions.

Before seeing this or anytime I’d see the little title on Amazon, I always had this vision of what Jackie and Ryan would be. It’d be slow, more allegory and certainly a drama rather than cheerful romance. All of these things are true, but perhaps my most surprising reaction is that I did walk away liking this one. It’s not the best I’ve ever seen, but it’s interesting and the acting is good. Katherine Heigl doesn’t usually play these sorts of roles but she’s good. Additionally, it’s fun to see a grown up Ben Barnes from Prince Caspian in this. Fun fact, Heigl and Barnes also previously played in an R-rated comedy The Big Wedding as siblings.

If you enjoy more organic type stories, I think you’d like this. This one doesn’t paint any kind of pretty picture and instead tackles tougher subjects which makes the viewer ponder some of these elements. There’s divorce, fear, emotion, creativity, death, and realizations. The last of which makes for an interesting conclusion that I wasn’t really anticipating. Or at least I think that’s the what the conclusion is saying. The film allows for a few truly touching moments emotionally and I actually did think the first kiss is really well filmed. It’s packed in emotion and has a lot to say because of this, but also manages to capture it so that it’s beautiful. It’s these moments that help to make the film worth seeing. jackie and ryan

Content: Jackie is not divorced yet she does end up in bed with someone. We see them lying together, sheets pulled up talking. They also share kisses. There’s some minor profanity and maybe one use of the f-word. There’s an off-screen death (it’s significant in an emotional sense to a character rather than being visual). The film is PG-13.
