‘ANOTHER TIME’ IS ORDINARY ROMANCE ABOUT FATES

Using a by-now popular name as its lead, this 2018 romance drama is about time and fate, and trying to make a love story where there maybe isn’t one. This is the gist of Another Time, a film about Eric Laziter (Justin Hartley), a top employee in his firm, Eric is pushing back against his boss Ben (Mark Valley) over the assignments he gets. His latest is working with Julia Practor (Chrishell Stause), a woman whose company his firm has just made theirs through acquisition.

The thing is, his boss will give Eric his choice of new clients, but first he has to spend two weeks working with Julia to smooth over any lingering acquisition hiccups. Despite reservations and not looking for it, Eric falls for Julia, but in order to possibly have a relationship with her, he will use his fascination with astrology and time to go back to meet her before

FILM REVIEW | ‘PROVIDENCE FALLS: CHANCE OF A LIFETIME’ PART ONE REVIEW

on Youtube

This is one of those films that may entertain but doesn’t really work. It’s, presumably, a low budget film that appears on different free streaming platforms, and to be honest, it isn’t really memorable. What does market the film is having Justin Hartley in the lead. First gaining household name fame in NBC’s This Is Us, the actor is now on CBS with the drama Tracker. The film fits with the “time travel” kind of trope as Hartley’s Eric “goes after” (in a sense) the one he feels a connection with. As an aside, at the time of filming, Hartley and Stause were in-real-life marrieds.

To be honest, while it’s fun to see Hartley in something pre his “star power” days, I don’t really love anyone in their respective roles. In addition to the lead names, you’ll also see Jake McLaughlin and Arielle Kebbel, too. The script, for these characters and their stage in life, well, it doesn’t really fit what we want to see from this phase of life. The production quality (some of the sound isn’t great), as a result, isn’t really totally fitting. Because of these things, watching this, I felt a greater disconnect than I like to.

If you like the concept (time travel) then you may enjoy Another Time. The whole pursuit of Julia feels a little exaggerated, but I can admit, it’s still has sweet moments. I think this title did have potential, but in reaching for the stars, it overdoes it. This isn’t exactly “the” movie I’ll enjoy when it comes to titles that would be a peer to this.

Content: there are a few uses of the F-word. The film has a TVMA or R rating depending on where you look. The only reason for this seems to be the profanity since the rest of the film is relatively unproblematic. There is lots of time travel talk which, for one character, is because of an obsession to be with someone.
