Noah Rawley loves Brooke. But he holds him back from telling her. As he goes into work on this ordinary day, preparing for normalcy, he hears shots ring out. Along with the talented CGIS team he leads, they spring into action and take care of the situation. His heart nearly stops when he realizes Brooke is at the event before he sees her alive and well trying to help victims. Before anyone can heal, these investigators soon uncover more to this sinister plot.

REVIEW | Like anything that Dani Pettrey’s name proudly march across, The Deadly Shallows is a good read. Following in the footsteps of the two prior Coastal Guardians novels, this one moves at a rapid pace, which throws everything (fast!) at our team of heroes. Speaking of heroes, there’s a stacked group in this novel, all of whom were introduced in earlier novels The Killing Tide and The Crushing Depths.

You see the CGIS team returns in full, yes, but also PI Austin, too. Along with Caleb, these two feature heavily alongside Brooke and Noah. It’s kind of a switch off between chapter breaks of these duos, all of whom are working to solve this one crime. This genre is one of those that throws some romance into the mix of adrenaline, too and it helps balance the book. Some of these important conversation or emotional moments feel unexpected in the middle of the thrills, but they help us know everyone better.

Full of good guys stepping up to do what’s right, and noble beliefs. There’s lots of prayer references, too, though not every theological mention do I agree with. Like anything from Pettrey or industry peers like Lynette Eason or Irene Hannon, this is a solid addition to this series of team novels and what more, it’s all of the teammates we already grew to love.
