‘ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL,’ SERIES TWO: STILL A MASTERPIECE OF A SHOW

September 22, 2022 Rissi JC 3 Comments

Since I didn’t jump into series two of the popular All Creatures Great and Small British series, I’m late to the game. However, finally we see the second set and can say, it’s something work waiting for.

All Creatures Great and Small, Series Two (2022) Masterpiece Review

Working hard is never a problem for James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph). One of the two veterinarians working in the country Yorkshire practice, James’ life has just gotten complicated. Back from a trip to visit his parents, who are struggling, James also returns to work with his mentor Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) with a new job offer in tow. The question is… does he have someone to stay for and remake his life in the country?

Helen Alderson (Rachel Shenton) is trying to hold her head high after leaving her wealthy fiancé at the alter. Working the family farm with her father and younger sister, she doesn’t know what’s next but appreciates the friendship of James, and Siegfried’s younger brother Tristan (Callum Woodhouse). Trouble with Tristan is, he lives with the assumption something is true that isn’t!

There is so much good and entertaining about this British series. It’s like an easy breath of fresh air to sit down on a Sunday night and get lost in. A remake of an 70s era series, this is an easy comfort watch with characters we love. This not only includes James, Helen, Yorkshire residents and the Farnon brothers, but also Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley), the no nonsense housekeeper. Everyone is easy to like and look forward to spending time with.

Everything about this production is beautiful (with perhaps the exception to some of the animal ailments they encounter). From the filming to characters, it’s all so lovely. In this, there’s a particular set of moments between two characters throughout a handful of episodes that while quiet and not about the blockbuster style climax are just gorgeous. There’s also plenty to root on and cheer for in the lives of any of our main characters. Tristan is the one dude who doesn’t commit, but I still like him and want for him all the best.

What is perhaps the greatest revelation about this season is not just the assurance a third year is on its way (already airing in the U.K) but also the looming darkness. The show is set just prior to 1940, and the upcoming war casts a shadow, especially for those who remember living through war. That aside and left with a combination of charm and cheer (because the final episode is about Christmas) to doom (that last image), we do have the impression darker themes will come up. Still, I really do want to trust the writers not to stray too far from what we love and all that makes All Creatures Great and Small what it is.

Content: Mostly anything some may not like (content wise) is some of the cases James goes out on. There are some vet issues that crop up that may make us go “eeww.” There’s births (that need assistance) and other issues like disease. There is conversation about putting a dog down, and other such conversations. Cheeky conversation revolves around neutering a male dog being because of an attachment to a female neighbor dog. There is some minor innuendo, and Tristan has a bit too much fun with the girls in town (one even suggests they have one last bit of fun before she marries). The series is mostly TV-PG.

All Creatures Great and Small is one of my favorites – I can’t wait to see series 3! I’ve even started reading James Herriot’s books and they are so delightful.

That’s awesome! I haven’t read the books, but every time the opening credits play and I see the “based on,” I’m always reminded that this was a book first. :)
