THE ‘SISTER BONIFACE MYSTERIES,’ SERIES ONE IS ALL CUTE & COZY

British mysteries are some of my favorite things to watch. Especially when they’re more “cozy” rather than dark. Sister Boniface Mysteries is one such show.

Making it to Scotland Yard is the goal of Felix Livingstone (Jerry Iwu). He has big goals for his career as an investigator, but instead, fresh off the train at a tiny village called Great Slaughter he is met by a motor bike… with a nun as a driver. Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) causes St. Vincent and Mother Superior a little too much hassle.

Brilliant beyond her capacity, she attended collage and has a keen interest in forensics leading her to be the go-to for police investigations. Alongside Sam Gillespie (Max Brown), the local detective and the nosy reporter Ruth Penny (Miranda Raison), the gang’s ready to solve any puzzle.

This is one of those super cute and funny and cozy productions. All while being perfectly British, of course! In a nutshell, this is the kind of ideal cozy viewing I love when I just want to chill and laugh. Inspired by a character, Sister Boniface, who appears in the early days of the British show Father Brown, this is a kind of spin off. Popular as Father Brown is, I don’t see a lot of eager praise for this show on somewhere like Amazon. However, having BritBox, I tried an episode and immediately thought it quite cute.

The contrast in characters is fun too and adds a kind of character “texture” to the show. There’s the more rigid and by the book Felix; Sam who seems like an easy going guy but internally, he suffers; the nosy, semi annoying but in a likable way Ruth; and of course, Sister Boniface who is a unique example of contrasting characteristics all on her own. There is also the eager and girly, but smart Peggy working with the gang as a WPC. Girl even ends up diffusing and ultimately, solving in full a case of her own!

All in all, this is one of those cozy and charming British mystery series. These are always like a warm cup of tea that just makes you smile and yet gives you a little mystery to untangle, too.

Content: there is murder in each episode and we see the bodies for each crime. None that I remember are graphic or overly bloody. Still if bodies on screen isn’t something you typically watch in TV shows, you probably won’t like this. There’s some innuendo (minor) and various affairs (heterosexual and homosexual) are uncovered during investigations.
