‘SECRET OBSESSION’: TV FILM STANDARD BUT DECENT PSYCHOLOGICAL MYSTERY

Part of a group of mystery titles from Netflix, Secret Obsession is far from THE best mystery. However, it does get a little dicey near the end.

Secret Obsession (2019) Netflix Film Review

Waking up in the hospital with no memory is scary for Jennifer Williams (Brenda Song). She flinches when someone touches her and doesn’t even know her husband, Russell (Mike Vogel). Here and there she has flashes of life before and even more terrifying ones of someone trying to hurt her even as she fights to escape. As Russell tries to help her settle in and cares for her, what Jennifer doesn’t know is Detective Frank Page (Dennis Haysbert) has questions about the accident…

Honestly, this really isn’t a tough film to unravel. It’s basic mystery that tries its hand at being something of a psychological mystery. Co-written, the script is by one writer who has written for Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and another who is no stranger to Christmas films. This film reveals early on the “who” of the terrorizing so it’s no real surprise or guessing game about the players.

Featuring former Disney child star Brenda Song, the film may be interesting to anyone who enjoyed The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and likes to see stars in their grown-up roles. I think I’ve seen her in things prior to this, but what escapes me. Mike Vogel was previously in The Brave, a short-lived TV series that I was a fan of. Alongside Dennis Haysbert, the cast isn’t bad as they play their roles well. Everyone is good and while the mystery is easy to untwist, they still help in curating a tense buildup.

If you like other Netflix mysteries like Dangerous Lies, you may like this one. It’s interesting and all about curious happenings. Plus, while the whole scope of the end isn’t happy, it does have a hopeful conclusion which is something.

Content: someone commits murder by snapping the neck of someone, stabbing a person, too. The former is more visual while the latter isn’t quite as graphic. There may be some profanity and there is the threat of torture and rape. A man and woman begin making out in bed before it goes no further. The film is TV-14.
