‘THE ADDAMS FAMILY’: A CRAZY FAMILY WHO LIKES THE MORBID

A 90s comic film about the famous Addams family, this updated film features hijinks and crazy-ness and probably more nostalgia that would go over my head. the addams family

The Addams Family (1991) Film Review

Shrouded in darkness and living in a large but creepy house, The Addams family is unusual to say the least. They aren’t accepted by polite society and yet they continue their pursuit of quirks like pursuit of the macabre. Daughter Wednesday (Christina Ricci) makes a game of trying to murder her brother, Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Then there is Gomez (Raul Julia), the patriarch of the family. Madly in love with his wife Morticia (Anjelica Huston), the one thing missing from his otherwise ideally dark life is his elder brother.

Missing for many years now, Fester Addams is the one piece Gomez regrets and so each year with Morticia at his side, they host a séance hoping to summon him. This year the event brings Fester (Christopher Lloyd) to their door, only it may not be the Fester they hope for.

I cannot remember if ever I watched The Addams Family entirely through or just the first half. This year I did watch it through and all I can say is… it certainly is interesting. Inspired by or based on the 1960s television show, I’m sure this film uses imagery or throwbacks that mean nothing given I haven’t seen the show. But I suspect for anyone who does like the classic show, anytime something has a kind of nod to its originator is fun.

I’m not someone who likes the idea of living a “dark” life or as a Taylor Swift lyric says to want “that pain,” so the lifestyle of these characters is weird. But then I can also watch this and laugh at some of the absurdities of their crazy. Which in part I do think is what the film intends. I think part of the direction they take the characters is so “absurd” that it’s meant to be darker, yes, but in that, they intend humor. The cast is all good and it will be interesting to see how the new Netflix series portrays the iconic character of Wednesday since Christina Ricci is, I think, well known for playing her.

If you want something that does have a sense of humor but also seems seasonally appropriate, check out The Addams Family.

Content: Everything the characters like is “darker.” Morticia and Gomez are “excited” by dark things like “pain” and the threat of it. There’s lots of swordplay and Wednesday constantly “experiments” on her brother. She ties him up, throws things at him, chases him around with weapons, etc. The film is PG-13.

Thank you for visiting; please do come back soon.

    1. I started the animated one as well a long time ago and cannot remember if I finished it either. I also need to watch the 93 sequel to this. Maybe I will tonight. :)
