‘ONE TRUE LOVES’: A UNIQUE AND (ALMOST) TIMELESS ROMANCE

Based on the novel of the same name (yes, by that beloved author), One True Loves is a story that feels timeless while still being quite imperfect.

One True Loves (2023) Film Review

Meeting her true love at such a young age may once not have been something Emma Blair could imagine. But she does. Jesse is all kinds of right for her. He wants adventure and his lens through which he sees life is infectious. Together, Emma (Phillipa Soo) and Jesse (Luke Bracey) travel and explore and love. They do nothing by halves and they find contentment and joy in their adventures. Then, nearly ten years into their happy love story, on the one year anniversary of their wedding, Emma receives the devastating news that her husband has died in a helicopter crash while on a photography job.

Unable to function or live, it’s the most unexpected people including her sister (Michaela Conlin), parents and best friend (Simu Liu) who pull Emma back from grief. Then… fifteen years after she first met Jesse, a voice from her past reignites all of the pain, forcing Emma to choose between the woman she was, and the women she now is.

The popular best-selling author Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote the novel that inspires this film. Something I actually did read before seeing the film. Surprisingly it’s a good adaptation. The novel also is something that I was surprised to enjoy. It did sound good, but I wasn’t sure how the story would read. The film, while rough in its roll out, becomes gentle and charming. The production jumps around in the first twenty minutes or so but doesn’t run overlong, and is grownup new approach to a trope many of us find a little annoying.

While not the best romance I’ve seen recently, One True Loves is memorable. It has the advantage of being more unique than most and the cast is really good too. I enjoyed Phillipa as Emma and it’s lovely to see Michaela Conlin again after her best friend gig on Bones. Everyone, far as I can remember, does their character justice and represents them well.

While not a film that will universally be for everyone, this is a lovely drama. Additionally unique is that its author wrote the script meaning this is probably why we recognize so much of the story. A romance that examines something deeper in a love story and ponders some unusual questions.

Content: the film features two sex scenes. Both cut before it goes beyond some making out and the removal of a shirt. There is some profanity including an f-word.
