‘TICKET TO PARADISE’: THE BEST BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE TO COME ALONG IN A WHILE

Seeing good movies in the theaters is a rarity. But I still read up on what’s releasing in theaters and what’s coming and Ticket to Paradise is one of the films I read about. Let’s learn about it.

Ticket to Paradise (2022) Film Review

Twenty-some years ago David made the only grand romantic gesture he ever would make during the relationship he has with Georgia. Post college and not wanting Georgia to accept a job offer on the other side of the country, he proposes and asks her to stay. A month later they are expecting and married. Now Georgia (Julia Roberts) is successful in her art career and David (George Clooney) and the bickering couple is thankfully exes now. Both also have different stories of David’s gesture and how they got here.

Reluctantly reuniting for their daughter Lily’s graduation, the two bicker again but the one thing they’re both happy and proud about is Lily (Kaitlyn Dever). She’s the one good thing they did. Off to Bali to enjoy a break, after her intense studies, with her best friend before she begins life as a lawyer, turns out, Lily has a surprise in store for her parents that requires they spend time together.

It’s been a MINUTE since I sat in a theater. This is not because I didn’t want to see something in theaters. No, not at all. In fact, I’m the weirdo who grows “bored” by the idea that I can see anything at the click of a button. I like going to the theater as an outing. Ticket to Paradise is the film that breaks this streak. For being a kind of buildup, I’m glad it’s this.

There are parts of the film that surprise me and parts that may not be a favorite. However, this is far better than some of the other recent raved over films. Promoted as more of a comedy, really this takes more of a dramedy approach. There’s comedy to start off the film and then really it grows into more of an emotional script. The film does a pretty good job of balance, nonetheless. What else I love about this is the tropes that are here but they play with them a bit. The reunion “romance” doesn’t play out in the neat and normal way and the beer pong scene is typical but also slightly unusual which I love. It’s these small things that allow this to stand out.

Of course, the cast helps to tie all of this together in Ticket to Paradise. Julia Roberts and George Clooney are funny and good together in roles that re-teams them. It’s also fun to see Kaityln Dever in a new role outside of her role as Eve in Last Man Standing and while I’m not sure we’re meant to, I have a soft spot for Paul, too, played by Lucas Bravo from Emily in Paris. Rounding everything together is the beautiful scenery and just the lovely moments between Lily and her parents. There’s bittersweet moments and hilarious antics and all in all, this is one ticket you may want to buy.

Content: this one is PG-13, but is relatively clean by comparison. There’s some make out scenes if that’s bothersome. A woman wakes up in a bed without conversation one way or another if she had sex; another woman wakes up beside a man (they question if they did anything). Someone is a bit of a party girl and drinks too much sometimes. There is an F-word and some other commonplace profanity.
