POP CULTURE NEWS SIXTY-NINE: THE TV SHOW NEWS ROUNDUP
Despite it feeling like it should be a Monday again (because on Tuesday I was sure it was Thursday), we’re at Friday and those that spend any time here know this means another round of entertainment news. There’s been a great deal of political news in the headlines this week but honestly who wants to talk about all of that? I know sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. Must be the weeks I’m feeling sassy and then there are some weeks I’m not. Clearly we’re in a latter week. Because of this, let’s find funny or at least headlines that are more fun to talk about. pop culture news sixty-nine

Making that list this week is, like always, news about TV shows, both good and bad, plus some random Netflix adaptation (!!) news I’ve been curious about. Let’s dive right in and see what the (fun side of) culture brings us this week.

If you like casting news, NCIS: LA has cast Marilu Henner (known to many from Hallmark’s Aurora Teagarden films) as Kilbride’s ex and Only Murders in the Building revealed a teaser this week featuring not just its three stars and Paul Rudd, but Meryl Streep as well.
Premiering in summer 2023 will be the sixteen season seven episodes of Outlander which will precede the eighth and final season, consisting of ten final episodes, Starz just renewed the popular show for its final year.
Speaking of endings, HBO will not be renewing the buzzed about (not always in good ways I guess?) reboot of Gossip Girl. Honestly I think I only saw one or two episodes of the original, but based on just the promotion for the reboot, I see why it doesn’t work. If you’re going to reboot a show, you have to find that niche of keeping with the same kind of nostalgia as the original, otherwise you’re not likely to be a winner.
Netflix has released its film slate which includes 49 titles. Among them there’s the sequel Murder Mystery 2 (March); Rachael Leigh Cook’s A Tourist’s Guide to Love (April); The Mother (May), produced by and starring Jennifer Lopez; Heart of Stone (August) which is a buzzed about Gal Gadot title; Damsal (October) which will be another Millie Bobby Brown + Netflix collab; plus there’s Jennfer Smith’s Love at First Sight (September) renamed from Statistical Probablitiy of Love at First Sight; and the likely R-rating romance-comedy A Family Affiar with Joey King and Nicole Kidman.
Amanda Bynes, after a troubled life, will make her first major public appearance in March at 90s Con with her former All That co-stars Lori Beth Denberg, Danny Tamberelli and Kel Mitchell. The Nickelodeon show is described as a kind of “sketch comedy” show for kids performed by kids. Bynes last credited acting role was in Easy A back in 2010.
When Magnum P.I. makes its NBC debut it will be a “sexier, more romantic” version of the show according to its stars.
If you’re a Chicago Fire fan, did you hear that Taylor Kinney who plays Kelly Severide will be taking a leave of absence? No other details are known expect that Kinney is taking the leave to deal with a personal matter.
Twitter is all upset over the current rift between media personalities at Daily Wire and Louder with Crowder. Have I seen the posts about this? Yes. Did I watch everything? No. Do I think mistakes were made by all? Yes. Onto other topics.
The latest young adult adaptation Netflix will tackle is Geek Girl. So far, the synopsis for the ten-part series reads “Geek Girl tells the story of awkward, neurodiverse teenager Harriet Manners whose life is turned upside down when she is spotted to be a model and embarks on a life-affirming journey of self-discovery as she balances high school and high fashion.” Already sensing it’s not going to pick up on the charm of the novels.
SEAL Team is returning to Paramount+ for a seventh season.
Wednesday lost its crown this week. Amazon’s Jack Ryan took the top spot in the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 Chart
Rumors are swirling that ABC’s Home Economics recent shortened season that just aired its finale could be the show’s last. What is your prediction?
