Serving Sara (2002) Film Review

Going nowhere fast in a job that sucks with no benefits, Joe Tyler (Matthew Perry) is a process server who doesn’t have to work hard to tick his boss off. Ray (Cedric the Entertainer) is just as annoyed with Joe. Despite this, he gives him another chance to serve a wealthy Texas woman divorce papers. When he fails his first attempt to serve the wife of the client, Joe gets competition and things get worse. Not to be outdone, even after another tongue lashing from his boss, Joe makes a second attempt and this time, he manages to serve Sara Moore (Elizabeth Hurley).

Sara has a little different idea though and she offers Joe a deal he may not be able to turn down.

One of the movies I saw years ago, finally re-watching this tells me that I forgot how entertaining it is. As one I haven’t seen many times, Serving Sara is kind of a unique premise compared to the movies I see now. Though anyone who likes One for the Money or The Bounty Hunter, will enjoy this. There’s similarities and all are the kind of films easy to enjoy as a popcorn movie.

This is one of those full of shenanigans movies that is hard not to enjoy. Some of the antics run a little overlong and this means, the film overplays some of its gags. Even with this flaw, I do enjoy this. The cast is good and makes everything easily watchable. This includes Bruce Campbell and a young but memorable Amy Adams. If you like comedic films and just enjoy a good time, this is it. It’s full of laughs which is sometimes all that’s needed.

You can stream Serving Sara on Plex or Starz.

Content: The film’s most crude example of humor involves a man putting his hand up the rear-end of a bull in need of “help” to “perform.” His hand remains inside the bull when he becomes aroused, which is with a pretend/automaton cow. There’s some other more minor crude humor. Some won’t like this brand of humor (calling someone “porkchop” for example) and other minor profanity. A woman shows someone her breasts to get something she wants (we see her back). The film is PG-13.
