POP CULTURE NEWS SEVENTY-FOUR: IS AMERICAN TELEVISION FAILING?
Friday is back and this means so are we. Ready to search out all of the most fun – and maybe not, entertainment type stories from this last week. Some we found are fangirl sad and others exciting but the quest is always to find more conversational and perhaps “serious” stories. Yet those don’t always pop in any given week. pop culture news seventy four

At least this is where it looks as we write this, which admittedly, is early (yes, I’m trying to be a bit proactive) so perhaps something more will spring up as the week progresses. Until then, we did find the following tidbits.
POP CULTURE NEWS SEVENTY-FOUR
LIFE IMITATES ART
In the world that is Yellowstone, we all know (even those, like me, that don’t watch it), there is PLENTY of drama. Earlier I wrote about Kevin Costner reportedly causing tension. This all because of a shooting schedule he requested. I said that he wanted to work a five day week when in actuality, I guess the alleged request was to shoot the back half of the current season in one week, period. This was, reportedly, a “source of frustration” for the creator (Taylor Sheridan) plus “morale problems” with other members of the cast. In that article, there was a report that Paramount had declined Costner’s ask and was instead planning to reboot the entire show. Now Costner’s rep joined the conversation stating:
“The idea that Kevin was only willing to work one week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone is an absolute lie. It’s ridiculous — and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second. As everyone who knows anything about Kevin is well aware, he is incredibly passionate about the show and has always gone way above and beyond to ensure its success.”
What do you think is true?
IS AMERICAN TELEVISION FAILING?
This is the one really interesting story I ran across this week. After multiple layoffs, restructuring and other shenanigans in the television world, the creator of the former Jennifer Lopez drama Shades of Blue made comments about this. While at the EFM’s Berlinale Series Market, Adi Hasak said the state of U.S. television is “a disaster zone right now,” going on to say, “Nothing is working.” While I’m sure he’ll “clarify” his remarks or apologize or some such thing, he’s not wrong. He also mentions the disaster of Disney’s various challenges calling it like a “mental breakdown” and that them owning Fox. This then led into Fox wanting to produce a modern Starsky and Hutch which is a sign of how over reliant streamers and networks are on the tired and true. Cannot say I disagree with him.
FINAL THINGS…
Ahead of its season ten debut, Hallmark renews When Calls the Heart season eleven. Much to, I am sure, the delight of many.
Kyle Jacobs, an award winning songwriter and former reality TV star passed away at the end of last week. Richards was also married to former country singer Kellie Pickler.
After months and weeks of being curious, Paramount+ opts not to produce a third season of the summer show Blood and Treasure. While I don’t think I found anyone (on social media) who enjoys this show, honestly, this news makes me sad. It was actually a really good show for anyone willing to look beyond the “popcorn” adventure type. The romance is one of the more impressive of modern TV and while it did deserve a third season, I can appreciate that we have a happy ending as is.
Speaking of cancellations, Disney+ is doing the things. Both The Mighty Ducks: and Big Shot, each of which had two seasons under their belts.
CBS renews NCIS , its Hawaiian counterpart plus CSI: Vegas, and a handful of other dramas. NCIS: LA is already cancelled and with a fate yet to be decided is Blue Bloods and SWAT. According to reports, Blue Bloods is its third most-watched drama so it would seem likely the show would get a great light even if only to wrap it up. Perhaps there is trouble getting the key cast to re-up which may lean into ending rather than killing anyone off. Rumor has it, there are budget cut negotiations going on.
Facebook and Instagram are about to roll out a paid verification service to verify accounts, not dissimilar to Twitter. This is supposed to help with fake accounts, allowing more security and offer costumer service for those paying. On one hand this seems good, but I detest more required information for verification going to a social media platform.
How many of these stories caught your eye this week? Did any make you smile? Annoyed? Mad? What stories didn’t we include that interested you? Would you read up on more of these? What are your thoughts on the TV cancellations? Comment all of your thoughts. Let’s talk.
Thank you for visiting; please come back soon.
Supposedly, Kevin Costner is somewhat of a diva. At least, according to my mother who said “fame went to his head” back in the day lol So, I think it could be true that there were some sort of demands made, but who knows haha just as long as we get more Yellowstone.
Honestly, I’m so sick of a remakes and reboots in TV these days. I want to have more original ideas out there. It’s nice to see things redone or even our favorite books brought to life, but I think hollywood needs to come out with more unique and original stories.
I don’t doubt he could very well be a diva! (Don’t know anything about the guy other than he’s really famous! ;D) And being a jerk about your work schedule isn’t necessary, but so many stars have done similar things (reduced their time on a show) and it works so it’s just funny to me that Yellowstone couldn’t do this. Totally agree! I absolutely admit I really enjoy “Magnum P.I.” (remake) but also, let’s create some new stories too!
