‘ENOUGH’: JENNIFER LOPEZ GETS TOUGH IN THRILLER

A film that’s now well over ten years old, Enough is one of the films with Jennifer Lopez I’d never seen. When it shows up on a streaming platform like Netflix, you remedy this.

Enough (2002) Film Review

Dreams are something Slim (Lopez) has. Biding her time working in a diner alongside her best friend Ginny (Juliette Lewis), she knows how to hold her own with jerks. Today the jerk hassling her doesn’t need her put down when another diner stands up and defends her. Having heard the man make a bet with someone that he could get her to his place within a week. Against her better judgement, she runs after the stranger who let her know her diner’s bet and before long she’s marrying Mitch Hiller (Billy Campbell).

A few years later, they have a young daughter and are living a prosperous and comfortable life. Trouble is, late at night, Slim learns she isn’t the only woman in Mitch’s life… and that’s when he hits her.

Unlike most movies I’ve seen Jennifer Lopez in, Enough is the type of movie I don’t associate her with. Regardless, she plays the role well enough. Two things do annoy though. One is I’m not wild about her as a mother, and honestly, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen her seem totally at ease playing this role. Beyond this, she plays the role well and enough timidity and fire passion to make it work. Secondly, I was surprised, given the film’s promotion, at how little, the actual action (as in taking action) part of the film is.

This is also an interesting film. The script takes the story in a place I did guess, but there’s also enough going on to make me consider another possibility too. It works as a good emotional thriller as a result there is more tension just because of how invested we are in the welfare of its characters. Perhaps not the best thriller ever, Enough is worth seeing if you like that genre or the cast.

You can stream Enough, at publication, with Netflix

QUICK FACTS

RATING: 3 out of 5

CAST: Billy Campbell, Juliette Lewis and Jennifer Lopez

RATING: PG-13

CONTENT: A woman is abused and punched twice in one scene. Later, she’s beaten (twice) more severely in a dark room but the camera kind of cuts these scenes in between another external scene/place so it’s not terribly visual. There’s another more graphic scene of hand to hand combat with blood and bruises and punches. Glass breaks and people are shoved into walls or sent over railings. Someone tries to join someone showering. We see the removal of a robe, but it’s not graphic.
