One of the ABC midseason show, this is a show that shows some promise. Here’s my initial impressions. the company we keep
The Company You Keep (2023) ABC TV Pilot Review
The family business is a kind of lifestyle for Charlie Nicoletti (Milo Ventimiglia). A con man who owns a bar, Charlie and his family keep each other, and their secrets, safe. Their latest job is a big one and all goes smoothly after a minor hiccup. Then Charlie’s fiancé takes off with their haul, double crossing not just Charlie, but his family. This includes his father (William Fichtner), mother (Polly Draper) and sister, Birdie (Sarah Wayne Callies). Feeling lost and unsure what comes next just as his parents plan to get out of the game, Charlie makes his way to a bar.
This introduces him to Emma (Catherine Haena Kim), a woman who also just had an emotional break. The pair have a night of passion that leads to possibly something more unaware that their professional lives could collide in a course that brings heartbreak.

This isn’t a show that I remembered as something I really wanted to see. But now that I did watch the first episode, I do remember reading its premise. It did sound intriguing and as if the show could have the potential to be a solid watch. It is. At least if this is anything to judge by. If you saw the short-lived shows like The Catch or Red Widow, this may be something you enjoy.
The connection between the cast is magnetic or interesting depending on who the pairing is. That same cast is good even without some of their scene partners which elevates the intrigue. It’s all quite good, but again, this is just the early days and like so many shows, I have this feeling this one, longer term, could become too tied up in knots and complication. Likely the addition of “America’s boyfriend” in its leading role doesn’t hurt. Whether you knew him way back when from Gilmore Girls or the more recent NBC drama This Is Us, many will tune in for him alone.
Between the romantic liaisons and the family bonds, The Company You Keep could be one of the better recent dramas. But I’m also reserving final judgement until we see more of what’s in store.

QUICK FACTS all based solely on the pilot episode
RATING: 4 / 5
CAST: Sarah Wayne Callies, William Fichtner, Catherine Haena Kim, Milo Ventimiglia; and Bridget Regan (guest role)
NETWORK: ABC
RATING: TV-14
CONTENT: Two characters spend hours locked in a hotel room. They make out before falling asleep together (clothed). They later do have sex, we see intercut scenes of them tangled in sheets, naked (sheets covering them) and we see them swimming nude and in the bathtub together. new show to me
It’s pretty good based on the pilot. I still have to watch more of the episodes though so we’ll see how it goes.
