POP CULTURE NEWS ONE HUNDRED and FIVE
THE END of IT ALL
After months (since July) of striking the WGA Strike is over. The writers are now “authorized” to return to work which means, according to veteran showrunner, Warren Light, that broadcast-TV’s primetime scripted fare could salvage a 13 episode TV season, if writers would be willing to a one instead of two week Christmas break. The SAG-AFTRA however hasn’t reached a deal, tentative or otherwise yet. They will return to negotiations on Monday. The particulars of the WGA deal isn’t something I’ve read up on since I really don’t care about the whole situation.
THE ROMANCE SOCIAL MEDIA is OBSESSED WITH
Everyone and their mom was posting about the thing that happened on Sunday. That thing was Taylor Swift appearing at the Chicago Bears vs Kansas City Chiefs football game. Of course, this because of the summer long rumors that Swift could be in a situationship with KC player Travis Kelce. The player went to her summer show back when she played the Kanas City stadium and made a deal, afterwards, about how he wanted to give her a friendship bracelet with his number on it. Needless to say, Sunday night and Monday the socials were obsessed with talking about and posting all of this “gossip.”
So, here’s my take. I get that in popular culture, Swift is a whole moment in 2023. Do I listen to and like her music? Yes. Do I see the stories about her? Yes. But I don’t obsess over her personal life. I also find Swift a contradictory personality. She’s been quoted as saying she wants to be known (in the press, etc.) for her artistry and her work, and not her dating life, but then there’s talk that she’s also remarked on wanting to be pursued by someone. It’s like she doesn’t want privacy… except when she does. Her fans also, which isn’t her words, also promote this odd thing of her being in the spotlight and treated as a queen, which then leads to her private life being on every platform.
Honestly, any public figure whether I like them or not, should have a personal life that is private. We don’t need to know who they’re dating or texting or talking too or being casual with. Like, no. (Also, just because it doesn’t happen publicly, doesn’t mean something doesn’t happen.) We want to listen to their music, relate to it or marvel at their talent. Watch their movies and get swept up in the glamour or romance of their characters, and then… well, move on. But then social media is a big culprit of why this isn’t true anymore.
