TEN REASONS YOU MIGHT LIKE ‘SUITS,’ THE NETFLIX STREAMING SURPRISE

by

When it comes to the popularity surrounding the television drama Suits, it’s kind of one of those “been there, done that” reactions for me. I watched the show (five seasons) years ago, back when it was still on the air. Now for some reason, in its streaming home on Netflix, it’s breaking records and surging to a new popularity. One that even is teasing the someday possibility of a revival, though producers and creators say coordinating everyone would make this unlikely. Since the show is seeing this strange surge, today we’re talking about ten reasons you might like Suits.

A show that first made its debut on USA Network in 2011, you know, back when the network produced good shows, Suits was a popular win even then. It spanned nine seasons and kept, for the most part, its primary cast through the years. The plot follows Harvey Specter, a brilliant but brash and sometimes reckless high-profile and high-paid lawyer. Known for being a “closer,” Harvey has no shortage of experience, and he’s always in the know. When coincidence introduces him to Mike Ross, Harvey thinks he’s found his latest grad student associate to hire. The trouble is, Mike has more than one thing chasing him and though a genius who has passed the bar, Mike has never actually gone to law school. Thus begins a series of wins and losses as these two begin their work.

Let’s look at a few of the reasons why Suits might be something to add to your streaming queue.

TEN REASONS you MIGHT like SUITS

CONNECTIONS

Though not unique to this show, the show does have some fun connections in in its tenure. Two being that both Gabriel Macht (who plays Harvey) and Patrick J. Adams (Mike) have their wives (though for Patrick it was girlfriend at the time) feature in a few episodes. Gabriel is married to Jacinda Barrett and Patrick, Troian Bellisario.

DONNA

From my viewpoint, there is one character who stands out, and that’s Donna. She’s a know-it-all, but not in an unlikeable way. More in the nothing gets past her, and as a result, she knows everything there is to know.

DRAMA

If drama is your thing, this one has it in spades. Between the fake career element to law cases to the relationship complications, no shortage of drama exists.

HARVEY and DONNA

The dynamics between Harvey and Donna are fabulous. There’s so much banter and teasing of their relationship, and questions as to exactly what their relationship is or means. All we know is there is something and we need to know more.

HARVEY and MIKE

These two… they have ups and downs, and are even disloyal to one other here and there. But overall, I think they do end in a good place. I haven’t seen the ending of the show (yet) because I kind of fell off watching it long before Netflix revived it. But I do hope they end up in a good place.

HARVEY

I don’t think Harvey is a likable character for most people. And I get it. He does say and do the wrong thing… sometimes. I do like his confidence because I don’t think we have a lot of male characters so confident and sure of themselves and also be a protagonist vs. an antagonist. I think he needs to be a little kinder, which doesn’t have to come at the expense of confidence and then, he’d be someone easy to like rather than criticize when he needs it.

FASHION

If you like high end fashion, the women on this show sport all kinds of high end ensembles and jewelry. Equally so, the men always look dashing and smart in their impressive suits, too.

MEGHAN MARKLE

Honestly, Meghan isn’t a reason I’d watch Suits or why I enjoyed it, but I know many love the royal family and want to see anything and everything that relates to them. So if you’re one of these people, you might enjoy seeing Meghan in the role prior to her marriage and in a role she played while dating her now husband.

OFFICE POLITICS

Office politics plays a big role in the show, so if you like the drama when it comes to office dynamics, you’ll find plenty of that within these episodes.

VANESSA RAY

If you like Blue Bloods or the Jamie and Eddie relationship on the show, you may enjoy seeing Vanessa Ray. She appears in a handful of season one episodes and then pops up again in two episodes of season two.

At publication, you can stream Suits with Netflix.

Note: this is an adult show. The show originally was TV-14, but Netflix rates it TV-MA perhaps because there are some deleted scenes or dialogue. There’s lots of adult dialogue and sex references. There’s lots of kissing and implications of sex, plus some scenes of undress and lying in bed together. Drugs play a role in the story too, though mostly (from my memory) in season one.
