‘A NOT SO ROYAL CHRISTMAS’ IS NOT QUITE THE SAME

On a network that has multiple royal romance titles to their name, both seasonal and not, they bring us A Not so Royal Christmas. Cute and fun, the film will delight fans who enjoy seeing their favorite stars year after year.

A Not So Royal Christmas (2023) Hallmark TV Film Review

Chasing a tabloid story relating to any royal is what Charlotte (Brooke D’Orsay) does best. She works for a not-so-reputable tabloid publication, which isn’t her passion, but through the years, she’s become good at the job. Her latest assignment is to get an exclusive with a reclusive count. When she meets Lars, quite by happenstance, she begins to present her case for an interview, claiming to be from Monarch Insider, a reputable royal publication.

But Lars isn’t really Lars. Instead, he’s Adam (Will Kemp), an employee who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when a ruse is needed, it’s Adam who’s nominated, and Charlotte granted access to his story.

Similar in many ways to the usual pattern of any royal romance from a TV network, A Not So Royal Christmas is familiar, but different, too. This one uses the miscommunication (or lying if you will) trope to its max. Our heroine, as usual, gets to have most of the outrage, as if she didn’t do the same thing. Either way, this trope is tiring just because it becomes so dramatic and silly.

Beyond this, the film is unique in that it doesn’t have the same royal outcomes as most. Which is fun because that the little “spin” on the story we recognize will help this one an edge among its trope specific peers. In all other regards, this one is standard. It has cute exchanges between the leads which are two familiar network faces.

Cute, just like anything else you’ll see this time of year, A Not So Royal Christmas isn’t something I consider a favorite, but it earns points for being a little bit different. It’s a rare commodity to find that so when we do, it’s worth appreciation.

Content: Nothing note outside of a kiss or two, and the theme of miscommunication (lying) if that bothers you. Otherwise, it’s the usual TV-G rating content.
