Recently I finally watched Damsel, the production from Netflix featuring the popular and current “it” star Millie Bobby Brown. A film plays heavily into the girl power phenomenon, and was also promoted heavily ahead of its premiere, we had thoughts on the film. But we also love other films similar to it, if not in story, then in feel and expectation, so today we’re sharing some Damsel watchalikes or if you like Damsel, what this, if you’d prefer. Either way, hopefully we can find a few to fit.

The film, if you haven’t seen it, features Millie Bobby Brown as a stubborn woman trying to help her people. When her father receives a proposal for his daughter’s hand in marriage, Elodie enters into a marriage with a prince in order to help her people. What she doesn’t know is an ancient requirement of the royal bloodline is required, and she is the unwitting sacrifice.
Since this isn’t a new type of film, we decided to go on the lookout for some similar films, though as always, I’m going to unhappily add a disclaimer. This list isn’t meant to be taken seriously. Instead, it’s all about fun. This means that no, not every title below will be exactly like Damsel, nor are the stories the same. But we tried to share titles that are similar even if just in their quirkiness and breaking the mold of their genre. If I’m being honest, I also think some of these titles do this trope way better. Let’s meet these watchalikes, shall we?
DAMSEL WATCHALIKES aka IF YOU LIKE DAMSEL, WATCH THIS
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
This 2014 miniseries is underrated and perhaps unknown when it comes to the famous fable, but it is an interesting drama. Stream, at publication, on Freevee
ENCHANTED
An oldie from Disney, this one is still a favorite of mine and something I enjoy re-watching once in a while. Amy Adams plays a princess who is banished from her safe animated world to the real one. Stream, at publication, on Disney+; or purchase on places like Apple
EVER AFTER
This is a traditional fairytale whereas Damsel isn’t, but nonetheless, it is still fitting. Much to the delight of many, I am sure, it boasts a heroine who’s got gumption. Plus, Drew Barrymore is lovely in the role.

INTO THE WOODS
An ensemble feature film featuring Emily Blunt, Johny Depp, Chris Pine, and Meryl Streep, this is a mash up of fairytale worlds. It’s also much sadder than I anticipated before seeing it, but still somehow entertaining, too. Plus, we get to hear the impressive vocal talents of Chris Pine.

THE KING’S DAUGHTER
A fantasy film with Pierce Bronson, this one follows a girl who forms a bond with a mermaid her father holds in captivity.

A KNIGHT’S TALE
This one doesn’t have royalty in the romance of the story, but royalty does play a role. The film also doesn’t use some creature as a villain, but it just feels like something you may like if you enjoy Damsel.

MIRROR MIRROR
Long before you knew her as Emily in the surprisingly (bad?) loved streaming sensation Emily in Paris, Lily Collins and Julia Roberts co-star in this re-telling of Snow White, which is really more of a comedy than a hard-hitting action film. But it still has its dangers and there is a beast… sort of.

PENELOPE
This one may be stretching things some since this is a modern story, but also just one about gentry rather than royalty. Still, it fits to an extent and follows Christina Ricci finding herself after being hidden away for years because of an unusual deformity.

THE PRINCESS
Damsel feels kind of like an “answer” to The Princess which is a Hulu original and Damsel is of course on Netflix. Featuring another popular young star, Joey King plays a princess who must keep to the shadows of her own castle in order to rid it of villains trying to force her into something she refuses.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE
This is a classic for so many. I saw it once years ago and don’t really remember loving it, but it may be something I should give another chance.

PRINCESS CARABOO
This is much lighter and cheerful when compared to Damsel, but it’s also entertaining and fun, and is a different type of fairytale.

PRINCESS OF THIEVES
Kiera Knightley stars in this Disney movie (back when ABC aired movies on Sunday night) about the daughter of Robin Hood.

PRINCE VALLIANT
Taking a page out of A Knight’s Tale‘s playbook, this 90s film is a fun story with a young Katherine Hiegl and Stephen Moyer. It’s set against the Camelot legend.

ROSALINE
This is a Romeo and Juliet re-telling (kind of) about the ex Romeo jilts for Juliet. It’s all kinds of fun, largely because of Kaitlyn Dever and her dry wit. Plus there’s sass and laughs and a kind of upside down ending that you’ll either love or feel tarnishes the classic Shakespeare story.

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN
Made in the same year as Mirror Mirror, this version of the Snow White fable is far more serious and dark.

STARDUST
No monster that I can remember, but this is one of those fun adventure flicks that admittedly does have more humor than Damsel.
