One of our traditions here is to scour the web, specifically, Amazon Prime and find out what costume dramas you can see there. Usually we share this list in April, and so on this first week in April, we’re looking into what is available to enjoy on Amazon Prime, and their free streamer Freevee. Let’s dig into the Period Dramas on Amazon Prime April 2024 because we all love a good romantic drama, and the pretty costumes, well, those are a happy bonus.

There’s also some I haven’t seen that I’m curious about. Of course, there are also countless options with various add on streamers like Max or Paramount+. Like we say in the opening, we’re keeping things limited to what you can stream solely with an Amazon Prime membership which includes Prime Video, and Freevee. Let’s dive in and see what we discovered.

THE ADVENTURER
This one says it’s about “ancient mysteries” and a “powerful evil” that has a hero on a quest. It’s not one I’ve seen, but it could be a fun adventure.
PG-13, the rating says this one has violence, smoking and foul language
AN AMERICAN RHAPSODY
Set in the 1950s, this one follows a girl who is reunited with her family after being separated during the war.
The film is PG-13
ANZAC GIRLS
Tells the story of women fighting a war in their own unique ways, and the heroism of their respective journeys.
A mature drama, this one would likely earn a TV-MA rating
THE AVIATOR
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this film as the infamous Howard Hughes.
PG-13 is the rating for this feature film
THE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE (SERIES)
A group of women do their part to fight the war by using their smarts to break codes. Anna Maxwell-Martin features.
TV-14 is the rating for this because of some thematic elements and some minor inuendo including some implications about a man abusing a woman.
THE COURTSHIP
A foreign language costume drama, this one is surprisingly cute because it’s a concept I don’t often see (a scandalous father, who has a house full of ill repute women, places an ad for his daughter to find a proper match), but the dubbed language doesn’t match the lips so its quite distracting. The dubbing is also quite modern, too. Oh! And the opening credits, and ending are darling.
The film is TV-14 for suggestive humor and the thematic elements about Ida’s father; there’s a scene of nudity when a model drops her clothing for a painter, and another woman looks at herself nude in the mirror once
DICKENSIAN
A twist on the Charles Dickens stories, this miniseries takes a few characters from his famous works and weaves them together into one story.
TV-14 for innuendo and darker themes
DR. QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN (TV SHOW)
A classic 90s series, this one is on Freevee and features Jane Seymour in the titular role. It also feels like a version of When Calls the Heart before the Hallmark show was even in the works. The show follows a female doctor living on the frontier and the ups and downs of her facing challenges.
The show is TV-14
THE DURRELLS IN CORFU (TV SERIES)
A BBC family show, The Durrells is a quirky and fun comedy show that will charm anyone who likes Masterpiece’s current charmer All Creatures Great and Small. It’s about a woman trying to keep her family together and so she moves them to Greece. A forbidden love story and familial challenges make up the main points of this TV series.
The show is TV-14
GRACE OF MONACO
Nicole Kidman plays the titular role in this 2015 drama based on the life of Grace Kelley and her journey from Hollywood star to a princess.
The film is PG-13 for according to the film’s page “nudity, violence, alcohol use, smoking, foul language, sexual content”
A HAZARD OF HEARTS
Based on a novel, this one follows a young woman whose father gambles away their estate (and her!), and so she must go live in a “cliff-top mansion.” This 1980s drama has a bit too much melodrama (though I respect how Helena Bonham Carter plays a heroine with gumption), but it kind of gives Jane Eyre similarities.
The rating for this is unclear (some sources say NR, others say R); there’s a scene where a man attempts to take advantage of a woman and some peril when she’s threated with weapons
HOWARDS END (MINISERIES)
The first episode is free on Prime and features an all star cast including Hayley Atwell and Matthew Macfayden. It follows the Schlegel sisters and their ups and downs as they navigate life. period drama on amazon prime april 2024

I CAPTURE THE CASTLE
Based on a novel, this film is whimsical and fun, and progressively bittersweet, too. It has a great cast including a young Henry Cavill. We follow sisters who find first love, and start seeing the world.
The film is R for some female nudity and innuendo
THE ILLUSIONIST
Edward Norton plays a talented illusionist who causes a stir in Vienna including catching the attention of the crown prince and his betrothed.
PG-13 for some sexual content (we see a couple have sex in shadowed filming) and some violence including murder
THE KING’S DAUGHTER
A fantasy film with Pierce Bronson, this one follows a girl who forms a bond with a mermaid her father holds in captivity.
PG is the rating for this fairytale flick
LADIES IN LAVENDER
This one stars Judi Dench and Maggie Smith as two women who take in a young and handsome stranger. period drama on amazon prime april 2024
The film is PG-13
MERCY STREET (SERIES)
Though it only lasted for two seasons, this Civil War drama is better than I anticipated and something I wish would have been given more time. It has interesting characters and is set during a time I don’t see many series take on.
The show is TV-14
MIDDLEMARCH
A miniseries, this one is based on the George Eliot novel about a small town village, the industrial revolution and the people who live there, centering on Dorthea Brooke.
TV-PG is the rating
MR. HOLMES
Inspired by the life of Sherlock Holmes, Ian McKellen stars in the titular role as the famous novelist.
The film is PG
MURDOCH MYSTERIES (SERIES)
Still running, this is a Canadian series about a clever detective who is ahead of his time solving crimes including forensics. This one is also on Freevee, but again, it’s not an extra charge so long as you have Prime.
The series is TV-14 for some suggestive content and violence, but nothing graphic

A forbidden romance story, this follows a young boy taken in by a family in Hawaii.

THE SECRET SCRIPTURE
A memoir written by a woman in her young life reveals her tumultuous life during the 1920s and 30s in Ireland.
PG-13 rates this drama
STONEHEARST ASYLUM
Kate Beckinsale features in this drama about a woman who lives in an asylum, and the doctor who finds her quite fascinating.
PG-13 is the rating for this one because of thematic elements including “treatments” that were common in this time period such as shock therapy.
TITANIC
No introduction is needed for this classic 90s love story featuring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio in a story that takes placed on that ill-fated Titanic maiden voyage.
The film is PG-13 for sexual content and nudity, and some thematic elements
WAR & PEACE (SERIES)
A remake of the classic novel, War & Peace is a dark and romantic period drama that has sorrow and much drama, but it starts with light and ends with happiness, so I appreciate that.
The series is TV-14 for thematic elements, and sexual content (a man becomes overly familiar with a woman) and there are scenes of war and tragedy.
WHEN CALLS THE HEART (TV SHOW)
A fan favorite on the Hallmark network, this features Erin Krakow in a (very) loose adaptation of the Janette Oke novels about a cultured city girl who arrives to a small country town where she teaches the children of the mining town. The show, which has been on for over ten years, has ups and downs, loss and love, all while remaining a ratings boon for the network.

WHEN HOPE CALLS CHRISTMAS
The Great American Family special, this one returns Lori Loughlin to the world of When Calls the Heart. Morgan Kohan also returns as Lillian Walsh.
PG is the rating for this Christmas romance film.
THE WORK AND THE GLORY
Something I haven’t seen, this one follows a family trying to settle and make their way into an established society. period drama on amazon prime april 2024
