The show really doesn’t, for me, work because it’s look and scripts are way too modern and when I watch a period drama I want to be transported. Not feel like it’s merely a simple costume party. Audiences don’t share my opinion as the ratings have translated to an eleven season run of the show with Erin Krakow as its leading star.

DR. QUINN MEDICINE WOMAN
Jane Seymour stars as a woman who makes waves as a female doctor in the 1800s. Stream on Freevee
FIVE MILE CREEK
An 80s show that isn’t easy to find. This follows the lives of people running the stagecoach including the station and the drivers. It’s set in Australia, and features a young Nicole Kidman. Find the DVD set on places like Amazon
HEARTLAND
If you watch When Calls the Heart for the era its set in, you won’t like Heartland. But if you watch it just because you like the themes, well, this show may give you that same vibe. Plus, it’s heroine Amy, eventually is sadly able to relate to Elizabeth in ways that make us sad. Also, WCTH actors like Kevin McGarry do pop in now and then, too! JERICHO (ITV)
A British kind of western, this didn’t get more than one set of episodes, so it’s more miniseries than TV show. It features Jessica Raine (from Call the Midwife) in the lead as a woman trying to make a way for herself and children in a rough and tumble area. The show is also very much more adult than When Calls the Heart, so if you like the show for that reason, this won’t be for you. Purchase to stream on Amazon

LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD
A British show about two villages who “duel” (in funny ways) and are separated by a lower and higher class, this one is charming albeit a bit too sentimental for me. Julia Sawalha from the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is a leading character throughout. Stream, at publication, on BritBox
LITTLE MEN
I haven’t seen this show, but it sounds like something When Calls the Heart fans could enjoy. It follow Jo March, now widowed as she continues to run her Plumfield school. From what I see, Meg and Amy also make appearances. Stream, at publication, on Prime
BONUS! VIRGIN RIVER
Modern, yes, but this Netflix show is a kind of charming and sweet story about a woman who starts new after the loss of her husband. This show is also more adult than WCTH (sexual content, minor profanity, thematic elements). Stream on Netflix
