IF YOU LIKE ‘MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE,’ TRY THESE
We have more than one feature around here. All of which can be fun. The thing it, sometimes we neglect these features and forget to add new additions to them. In an effort to remedy this, consistency is going to be something we practice. (Also, ask us about these neglected features if they disappear again!) Our feature today is another in our watchalikes category that’s all about an ‘if you like Miss Scarlet and the Duke, try these’ list. The Masterpiece show is one of the most social media popular shows, which means the list is all about putting a bit of a spotlight on this period drama series.

IF YOU LIKE ‘MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE,’ TRY THESE. A list of #MissScarletandtheDuke 'watchalikes' if you love the #PeriodDrama mystery! #Mystery Share on XFor anyone who doesn’t know what Miss Scarlet and the Duke is about, it follows a woman in 1800s London who decides to run her late father’s detective agency. In the process she bumps heads with William, the childhood friend who is now an inspector and clashes with Eliza multiple times. The series goes from there with conflicts and a kind of non-endgame romance tease that doesn’t always work. As the British series, now done with its fourth series, is so popular, we’re going to see if we can find some watchalike recommendations.

BELGRAVIA
Not a mystery, this Julian Fellowes period drama has hints of mystery and interesting characters, and it’s pretty heavy on the romance, too. Stream, at publication, on MGM+
MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES
The same as Miss Scarlet in terms of this being a period drama, this adaptation takes place letter in the 1920s, and features a sassy heroine. The romance is also way more interesting (they say so much in one look) and better acted and written, too. Stream, at publication, on Acorn TV
Note: this show is more TV-14 than Miss Scarlet. There is implied sex and we see couples lying in bed with sheets and clothes laying about.
MURDOCH MYSTERIES
Much lighter than ‘Miss Scarlet,’ this Canadian show would still be considered similar. It has an ensemble character group and is all about mystery solving with a hero who likes to invent things. Stream, at publication, on Acorn TV
THE SALLY LOCKHART MYSTERIES (MOVIE DUO)
This one was likely meant to have more stories and is based on the novels by Phillip Pullman, but only got the two films, which I think filmed back to back. Also, Ruby in the Smoke was directed by Brian Percival who directed North & South. Stream, at publication, on BritBox
VIENNA BLOOD
Much darker than Miss Scarlet and the Duke, this PBS show is similar in its atmosphere and that it’s a series about mysteries. Stream on Masterpiece PBS
Note: this is a very mature show. There is nudity (sexual and in autopsies) and sex. One scene shows a couple having sex (backside nudity on him and front on her) but blurs some of the bodies.
MOVIES to CONSIDER
AN INSPECTOR CALLS
This one is about a dinner party of a wealthy family and the inspector who questions them about the suicide of a young woman. The film is set in the 1900s. Stream, at publication, on BritBox
This one is TV12, which is probably a PG-13 equivalent.
THE MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB
An Australian period drama movie, I don’t see many complimentary reviews for this, but I think it’s good. Or at least my memory of it is. It follows a kind of murder mystery about two men, one of whom is murdered after sharing a cab with another, and I think there’s a kind of star-crossed love story, too. Stream on places like Freevee or with a BritBox subscription.
This one is TVM(ature) for some nudity including a trip to the brothel, and a woman being held against her will; there is a murder.
