Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone (2021) Hallmark TV Film Review

Struggling in life, Benedict Stone (Tom Everett Scott) is trying to get by while convincing his wife to come back. Married ten years, the two are going through a two-month separation after a happy early life together that gradually strains throughout their struggles to start a family. Despite his pleas, Emilia (Mía Maestro) doesn’t want to return. She wants more time to work on her art.

Everything for everyone changes when Benedict receives a knock on his door he never expects. On the other side of the door is Gemma (Ella Ballentine). A sassy sixteen-year-old with an eye for matchmaking, Gemma is Benedict’s niece, the daughter of the brother he hasn’t spoken to in some 20 years.

One of the films that I didn’t rush to see, this 2021 drama sat off and on in my streamers DVR for quite some time. As I’ve recently been watching a few of the Hallmark movies in a reverting to former habits, this is one I added to the watched library coffers. Some of the aspects of Rise and Shine Benedict Stone are unique and the gemstone angle is cool as is the jewelry design. Nonetheless, it isn’t one of the favorites.

Learning strongly into the familiar plot (based on a novel), this one has the angle of past family and present between Benedict and his wife. It is fun to see Mia in something again after seeing her years ago in the popular ABC drama Alias. If you’ve seen the more recent Anne of Green Gables flicks, you will also recognize Ella who played Anne. Despite these likable characters, I don’t like the progression of the film. All of these TV movies wrap pretty “suddenly,” but some seem more rushed than others, and this is one. It’s more of a everything-is-suddenly-fine ending rather than a hope of healing end. In some ways the former works, and in others, the latter would suit better.

Those viewers who enjoy the drama side of Hallmark will most likely enjoy this film.

Content: there is the usual ‘G’ rating content although there are some “thematic” elements such as marriage troubles and loss of parents.
