‘THE FALL GUY’ IS A GOOD TIME POPCORN FLICK

by

Following up his starring (and buzzy) role in Barbie, Ryan Gosling is back in Fall Guy, a film that has its own buzzy hype and is an action comedy.

Fall Guy (2024) Film Review

Recovering from serious injuries is the sum of Colt Seavers (Gosling) life. His personal life is a non-existent mess that no one is in. Then a chance to earn some redemption and respect comes when he has the opportunity to return to work along with perhaps finding some happiness. His ex, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) is director of the new film luring him back. Then a missing movie star becomes a problem, and Colt, wanting to ensure Jody’s movie isn’t a miss, has the task of finding him, but how is he to impress in his second chance if he’s chasing a movie star?

A film that had much hype and excitement, The Fall Guy is something I was really curious to see. Not only because I love the cast, but because it did sound fun, too. These days, that’s all I really require finding in a movie, and anytime fun is the primary goal that’s the time I sit up to take notice. Inspired by a TV show of the same title from the eighties, this movie may be different than it (I’ve never seen the show), but it’s a good time due all to its own merit.

The way the story unfolds is done in a way I don’t think I’ve seen, and describing it is impossible to do. It’s not that it’s a revolutionary thing, but something about it “feels” different. The conversations between Cold and Jody are silly, but somehow deep and important at the same time. I like how they care for each other and that, for the most part, they both get to play roles in getting that happy ending. The action scenes too are good. I love the unique effects and experience of the club scene, plus the purposefully colorful Gosling is a fantastic addition. He makes highlighter look cool.

The Fall Guy made me laugh for the first time in quite a while. It’s one of those popcorn flicks that I wish the movie industry understands we still need. A bit slow in places, yes (surprising given the action), but mostly, it’s just good. It’s fabulous that this is kind of like a “meta” movie within a movie, and that it’s a behind the scenes look at how those cool stunts happen; and it’s unique comparatively. Plus, it’s sweet that Colt’s motivations, which are honest, are in order for Jody to succeed in this her first big industry break.

It won’t be a film everyone can enjoy, but I think if you’re able to realize that this is the movie we should have and deserve (purely entertainment), then I think you’d be able to enjoy this. It’s ridiculous in places, but that’s part of its charm, and when we understand this, the way we enjoy or appreciate movies is far superior.

Content: there are a few innuendos and suggestive remarks here and there. We see a couple making out a time or two and there is the standard use of profanity including sh*t and two use of the f-word. Mainly the film is PG-13 for the action sequences. People go through windows and weapons provide threats to people. Others are imprisoned. Injuries happen as a result.
