ALICE IN WONDERLAND: THE MANY ADAPTATIONS OF THE CLASSIC FABLE
Most of us probably met the spunky heroine Alice in the Disney animated film Alice in Wonderland. In this fable also is a character called the Mad Hatter who is, as his name might suggest, quite mad. But we also love the quirky rabbit, too. October 5 is Mad Hatter Day which made me instantly remember the fable he lives inside and so this leads to our list of Alice in Wonderland movies. One that I’m not sure will have all that many fitting titles.

The story follows Alice Kingsleigh a curious girl who falls into an even curiouser world where strange caterpillars wear a monocle and rabbits run around in top hats shouting about being “very late” for important dates! The world is Wonderland and Alice must figure out how to escape this unusual world.
Let’s meet the people who play Alice and the Alice in Wonderland movies you can see of this story penned by Lewis Carroll.
ALICE in WONDERLAND MOVIES
ALICE in WONDERLAND (1933)
I didn’t know this film existed until I sat down to collect titles to feature. Featuring stars like Gary Cooper and Cary Grant, the film certainly has a good deal of star power to its name. Other notable stars like Bing Crosby (rumored to initially be cast) and Betty Grable (she tried out for the lead role) were attached. While this one isn’t considered a favorite, perhaps any classic movie lover would still enjoy.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND: THE MANY ADAPTATIONS OF THE CLASSIC FABLE. Talking about some of the #AliceinWonderland stories adapted for the screen! #Fairytale #Disney #MovieAdaptations Share on XALICE in WONDERLAND (1951)
This animated film from Disney is perhaps a title many of us grew up seeing. Though there are earlier versions, Disney perhaps took it more mainstream with their version. Remembering if I’ve seen it makes me feel a bit like Alice, which is fuzzy. I assume the answer is yes I did see the film, but I don’t have any particular memory. Regardless this film is probably the one that most adaptations after look to for inspiration.

ALICE’S ADVENTURES in WONDERLAND (1972)
This is one I know little about. However, movie trivia says it did sway the 1999 film to not cast Kirsten Dunst in the titular role because of her similarity to Fiona Fullerton who plays Alice in this 70s era film.

ALICE THROUGH the LOOKING GLASS (1998)
In addition to playing a spunky Jane Austen heroine, Kate Beckinsale also played Alice. This version, described as modern, is about a mother who falls asleep reading her daughter a bedtime story only to travel through the looking glass.

ALICE in WONDERLAND (1999)
Before she was the clever Mac in Veronica Mars, Tina Majorino first took a tumble into Wonderland as Alice. In this Hallmark Entertainment production there’s a two hour and thirty-some minute clock, and perhaps what ills this is its production era in that the effects aren’t always great. I only made time for about forty minute of this miniseries but regardless it did seem entertaining. One of the stars is also Martin Short who is now enjoying fame and acclaim for his addition to the trio of stars from Only Murders in the Building.
Though I don’t attest to their accuracy (because with the Internet one never knows), some trivia states that many of the scenes in this film are from the illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, who is cited as the original ‘Alice’ artist. Despite my thought that there aren’t very many versions of this story, this 1999 story is in fact the twelfth, and it did win awards.

ALICE (2009)
This modern two part (or sometimes 3-hour movie) miniseries is described as a modern story featuring Caterina Scorsone in the lead role as a woman chasing after a boyfriend who disappears which is how she finds herself in Wonderland, and perhaps finding love among its residents. It’s been a long while since I watched this, but as I remember Alice is supremely entertaining.

ALICE in WONDERLAND (2010)
In an updated version, Disney brings the Alice in Wonderland movies to life in this live action film featuring Mia Wasikowska in the titular role as a young lady who has lost her muchness. It’s a kind of sequel in a way since it shows Alice all grown up and returning to Wonderland as she tries to escape the tea parties and polite society of her reality.

ALICE THROUGH the LOOKING GLASS (2016)
In Disney’s sequel, Mia Wasikowska returns as an Alice who must return in order to rescue and help her friend The Hatter regain his “muchness.” Like Mia, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway also return to this quizzical return down the curiouser rabbit hole. The performances, as I remember, are all good and the effects, while a bit crazy, do seem to fit the kind of storytelling Disney wants. Plus, nothing is harmed by Tim Burton behind the camera.
