Returning for another mystery is Hallmark’s married would be sleuths Birdie and Alden Case. This time we join them in The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death is Listening.

Mystery and solving a crime is what helped the Cases to rediscover them and their relationship. Now they’re pursuing work as private investigators, going to school to improve their trade. But the one thing they worry about is, are they normal? Do they have hobbies outside of their crime podcasts and crime solving. This sends Birdie (Aimee Garcia) and Alden (Paul Campbell) to try to find new friends and new hobbies.

Soon they are distracted by a new case that again sends them chasing clues to solve the murder of a celebrity.

As fun as these (this is only the second) mysteries are they aren’t my most favorite from this network. Irrespective of this I have to admit they are good fun. Seeing Birdie and Alden excitingly solve cases and finding enjoyment together in seeking clues is entertaining.

The script is also actually good. From the relevant cultural mentions (which may be complimentary or making fun depending on how you take it) to the funny mouse investigation, there’s plenty to amuse. Production is impressive too. From an entrance made by one character to the unusual (for the network) themes of marriage and featuring sleuths who share a marriage, I have to admit there is something that sets this apart.

Like any of their mysteries, you’ll find The Cases of Mystery Lane: Death is Listening lots of fun. There’s a kind of cozy mystery vibe that isn’t unfamiliar to movies on Hallmark Mystery or from 80s shows like Murder, She Wrote. If you enjoyed the first film, enjoying this should be high on your priority list.

  1. Overall I like this series. I’m happy to see Hallmark featuring more stories with married couples. but I think this one wasn’t as good as the first. My mom was irritated by how goofy and immature Alden comes across.

    1. I don’t LOVE Alden as a leading character. I mean he IS fun and I do laugh at him, but overall, if I were to make a list of favorite heroes (or leading guys), he wouldn’t crack the top twenty. ;)
