CHARACTERS WHO MAKE POLITICS SEEM (DARE WE SAY THIS) FUN
Hate it or love it, loathe it or take interest, political season is counting down its final days to election day. This means that probably none of us no matter our opinion is escaping the stories or headlines or spins of the election cycle. Considering that, we did think it might be fun to meet characters who make politics fun. Because while we may not love politics, sometimes watching a favorite character do their thing in politics can entertain.

CHARACTERS in POLITICS (WHO MAKE IT FUN)
VANESSA BAXTER from LAST MAN STANDING
Vanessa decides to run for a local race all in hopes of helping the school. As a former teacher and tutor, she cares deeply for children and trying to help them succeed.

LUCAS BOUCHARD from WHEN CALLS THE HEART
Ambitious and drawn to the widowed schoolteacher Elizabeth Thatcher, Lucas is a businessman who arrives in Hope Valley. He eventually enters the political arena (right fans? I’ve only seen episodes here and there at this point) in a role I’m assuming he will manage well.
Stream, at publication, with Hallmark+ or Peacock
SIR. ROBERT CHILTERN from AN IDEAL HUSBAND
A man with ambition and grand plans to make it in society, Sir. Robert is a man in parliament who finds himself the victim of schemes and blackmail when someone new enters his societal circle along with his wife, Gertrude, and best friend Lord Goring.

MAYOR KATE HENNINGS from SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Candice Bergen plays a formidable character in this rom-com about a woman who is mayor of New York.
Stream, at publication, on Prime or Hulu
HANNAH HIGGINS and ELLIOT DOOLITTLE from THE MAKEOVER
In this Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, Julia Stiles plays Hannah Higgins, a kind of uptight professional who tries and fails in her bid for congress. She instead tries to make a kind of “everyman” blue collar worker into the ideal candidate. David Walton, well known from various different sitcoms, co-stars.
Stream, at publication, with Hallmark+ or Pluto TV
ALEX KEENE from FAMILY TIES
Michael J. Fox’s Alex was a very active participant in politics and while I cannot remember for sure, I think he did become involved in politics in his school. I also feel like if we had a revival of this show some fifteen years ago Alex would have been a character in politics. He always had opinions and while some may find him annoying I think he’s quite funny (as a character and actor) and I enjoyed his ability to articulate and stick by his points in a family that was quite opposite of his beliefs.
Stream, at publication, on Paramount+ or Pluto
MR. SMITH from MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
James Stewart features in this iconic film and role. He plays a man who is picked (in the hopes his naivety will make him a kind of pushover) to fill a senate seat. This inspires him to take up this new cause and he doesn’t stop fighting no matter his obstacles. This film is also known for its kind of iconic scene where Stewart gives a speech to congress where he advocates for his cause to the point of exhaustion. It’s also a classic film that has awards to its credit.

SUZANNE SUGERBAKER from WOMEN OF THE HOUSE
Formerly a character from Designing Women, Delta Burke returns to the short-lived Women of the House where she takes up her recently deceased husband’s congressional seat.
Stream, at publication, on places like Freevee, Pluto TV, Roku or Tubi
MARTHA TINSDALE from GOOD WITCH
This character both annoyed me as a viewer and also weirdly is endearing. She was a stereotypical kind of small town mayor who is also the town’s busybody. I didn’t ever finish this Hallmark show, but I feel like she had lessons she learned throughout which is helpful.
Stream, at publication, on Plex, Pluto, Prime or Tubi
ELLE WOODS from LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED, WHITE AND BLONDE
Ok, yes I know, this character isn’t a politician, but Elle does get heavily involved. Reese Witherspoon is iconic for playing the role of Elle Woods who when we first meet her determines to go to law school with very little to recommend her to this profession. Conquering this, in the sequel, she goes to Washington as a kind of advocate and the end of the film teases the idea that she’s going to be a part of politics.
Culturally (of this time) Elle is perhaps the most recognizable character in politics and technically she isn’t (yet) a politician. Do you think the rumored three-quel will have her as a politician?
