BEST LOVE STORY FEELS FROM BRITBOX’S ‘TOMMY AND TUPPENCE’
When it comes to TV shows, everyone probably has a favorite ship (yes, I know that word isn’t cool anymore) or a romance they wish would happen already! I am sure there are couples we all love and want to see become a partnership with roots in trust, happiness and love. One of the quieter ones that starts to form in 2026 is in BritBox’s Tommy and Tuppence, a story that is mostly about mystery but does tease us with a new TV romance to love.

BEST LOVE STORY FEELS FROM BRITBOX’S ‘TOMMY AND TUPPENCE’ Share on XThe Agatha Christie novels introducing Tommy Beresford and Tuppence inspire this series. In them we meet two young people who, having known each other socially, begin a kind of investigative business together. In this new variation, the story unfolds in modern times becoming the first English language contemporary show adapting an Agatha Christie story. Though I haven’t read the books, I have seen other adaptations set in the traditional period drama timeframe. Based on those, this would-be romance is plagued with more baggage, not the least of which is the fact that Tuppence already has a ring!
The set up is two characters who knew each other in school, and now, meet again after reconnecting at a party both are working at. Tommy realizes he still has unresolved feelings about Tuppence, and in fact, still loves her. Tuppence is struggling with her life now and because of this, she goes back and forth over what she really wants. This is where we’ll leave the “bigger picture” story. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the romance and the sweet love story moments between Tommy and Tuppence.
THE ROMANCE of TOMMY and TUPPENCE
THE (RE)MEET CUTE
These two knew each other in the past, but they meet again at a party they’re working. Him taking photos and her as waitress. They bump into each other and mid apologies, recognize each other. Tommy is naturally instantly taken in. He remembers that past, and he still carries a torch for Tuppence. Thing is, she’s got enough “complicated” in her life just now. Before the night ends, Tommy suggests they meet up because he still cares, not knowing Tuppence is reluctant.

The scene isn’t “big” or dramatic, but it does set up them, or the “them” that slowly begins to take shape.
NEARLY LOST
During one of their cases, Tuppence takes off after a suspect, and a delayed Tommy finds her lying at the bottom of the stairs. Afraid he has lost her, he runs to her and when she wakes, he takes her home where he cares for her and he confesses, perhaps in not so many words, but still, a confession, that he was afraid. This moment is the first really kind of raw and emotionally fueled moment between them that sees both of them letting down their guards.
Tuppence leans in and kisses him. Emotions fueling them, the pair deepen the kiss, getting lost in a moment that reality soon interrupts.

The series throughout its six-episodes has them mutually rescuing each other multiple times, which always works well. Emotion and tension typically fuels these scenes, especially in the final episode when Tommy, suffering from a likely concussion, is unable to escape a burning house and Tuppence fights with everything she has to save him.
AM I REALLY TOO LATE?
In the first season finale, Tuppence makes a decision. She’s going to stay in London. Despite her estranged husband trying to draw her back to the U.S., Tuppence feels best when she is pursuing this work with Tommmy. She wants to see if they can make this business work. She wants to be all in…
And despite back and forth, Tommy being hurt after loving Tuppence for years (and her running when he told her this in the past), Tuppence has a question. With an unsteady voice, and near tears, Tuppence asks the question she is most scared to ask: am I really too late? she queries. Tommy’s reaction is one of pain and yet, perhaps in hope, he takes a step towards her and begins to respond…
The show, because of course it does, interrupts them at this moment when a new case arrives at their doorstep.
All of these moments, though not the sweeping romance we usually champion, are still beautifully charming. The formula isn’t new (working together), but seeing them also falling in love, well is the delicate part. Or in Tommy’s case, falling deeper in love with Tuppence. Needless to say, I’m all in and hope that a possible season two gives these two a chance to discover a love story together.
