‘CRIMES OF FASHION: KILLER CLUTCH’ IS PARISIAN MYSTERY!

Putting Brooke D’Orsay in the lead role, Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch is (yet) another standalone TV mystery I’m finally watching.

Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch (2024) Hallmark TV Film Review

Working in psychology is something Lauren Elliot (D’Orsay) is good at. However, she has a career her father doesn’t really understand since she works as a psychologist who helps people in high fashion. Her latest client comes to her through her college best friend, Charlotte (Paloma Coquant), a woman who lives quite the glamorous life. When her client all but demands Lauren travel with them, she is whisked off to Paris where the sights and experience is slightly tainted by a backstage fashion murder.

As the daughter of a former detective, when Lauren’s best friend becomes a suspect, she becomes a bit of a thorn in the side of French detective André Duvreuil (Gilles Marini).

Though user ratings don’t agree, I think this is one of my favorite standalone mysteries from Hallmark in recent years. The opening is interesting and immediately pulls us in, especially if you know the lead well enough to recognize her, and while small in the scope of the production, I love the smoke transition that puts us back in the past.

Beyond just a transition, I did enjoy this film for other reasons too. Namely, Brooke D’Orsay, who much to my surprise, is actually good in this. She’s been good in anything I’ve seen her in, but for some reason I didn’t have the confidence of her suiting a mystery role. She does well and I enjoyed the kind of “fish out of water” element this mystery brings with it placing her as the only American among a group of suspects and investigators.

Like we said, based on user ratings this one isn’t popular, especially when compared with a peer from 2024. This doesn’t diminish the fact that Crimes of Fashion: Killer Clutch did entertain me. I paid close attention to this one versus some of other Hallmark films and found the (almost) lack of romance interesting since this is about solving a crime rather than the romances you’d find on the traditional Hallmark Channel. If you think you may enjoy this, give it a chance. It’s fun plus has some of that unique (and outlandish!) high fashion ensembles.

Content: nothing much to note. Of course, this one does have a murder so there is discussion about murder and how the victim dies. None of it is graphic (comparing to crime shows) though she will see a body lying dead on the floor with blood and of course, threats leading up to this. There’s a threat to someone when a chase with a gun ensues. It’s revealed through conversation that a character prefers the same sex. The film is TV-PG.
