‘THE MERRY GENTLEMEN’ UNWRAPS A CHEEKY CHRISTMAS LOVE STORY
Part of Netflix’s 2024 Christmas drop, The Merry Gentlemen, has a former teen star as its lead and it also, well, strips things down.
The Merry Gentlemen (2024) Netflix Film Review
Returning home for Christmas isn’t in the plans of city girl Ashely. But when she’s cut from her role in the long standing Broadway show she has been a part of for over a decade, her life suddenly changes. What Ashley (Britt Robertson) doesn’t expect to find back home is the small nightclub her parents run struggling. Using her expertise, she makes plans to save the family business. Something she does by staging a revue show with some of the local men.
While working on her plans, Ashley finds one such ideal guy in Luke (Chad Michael Murray), a local carpenter who may end up being perfect in more ways than one.
NETFLIX FILM REVIEW | ‘HOT FROSTY’ HAS LACEY CHABERT IN REALLY CUTE CHRISTMAS FAIRYTALE
‘THE MERRY GENTLEMEN’ UNWRAPS A CHEEKY CHRISTMAS LOVE STORY. #ChadMichaelMurray stars in this #Christmas romance flick from #Netflix. #TheMerryGentlemen #ChristmasMovies Share on XAs a title that finds its home on Netflix, this is one of those films that isn’t Hallmark-ish. It’s more adult and has a sassier concept than most. It also strips down its leading men, too, so there’s that too. If you enjoyed Lifetime’s 12 Men of Christmas, then you know the type of film you’ll see here. It’s actually a really good time and has likable characters, too. There’s a sweet swoony dance moment, the usual meet-cute silliness and more than one performance by the titular characters. It’s also funny to see the reaction of Ashley’s parents to her plan to revive The Rhythm Room.
Surprisingly I really enjoyed The Merry Gentlemen. It’s the same and yet different than I anticipated. It’s a fun time and as someone who saw Chad Michael Murray in titles like A Cinderella Story or Freaky Friday, seeing him in these Netflix or TV shows (he’s also in Sullivan’s Crossing) is good fun; Britt Robertson has been in things like Mother’s Day and Tomorrowland. Co-star Marla Sokoloff also wrote the script. There are some deeper (compared to the genre) conversations and moments between the characters, and I love the easy-going nature, which I know is something some people don’t love about Murray’s acting. It works for most of his roles, and this one is no different.
Not much else can be said about this one. The breakup dramatics (and everything surrounding it) are, as usual, silly, but other than this, it’s simply a festive film that you’ll certainly be able to turn on and enjoy during the busyness of this season.

Content: there is some minor innuendo and there’s about four to six scenes of shirtless guys performing their numbers if that’s not your thing. The film is TV-PG.
