This time of year, it’s mostly fun because it’s more about debating things like the best Christmas cookie or what types of movies are actually, well, classics. Some of the movies are considered critical classics and others are fodder for fun debate about their status. But whatever the case, we are rounding up a short list of these classics and how to stream fan favorite Christmas movies – because while we want to have fun, we also want to be helpful, too!

We all know where to see or find those shiny new year releases, but what about the oldies? The purpose of this is to remind you of ones you love from year to year and share with you where you can find them. This also means we exclude TV films or things like Hallmark because, well, they aren’t really in the category we’re going for in this specific list. Let’s see which ones we remember to include!

A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
If you are anything like me, you’ve probably seen this 1,000 times. It’s been years since I saw it, but it along with Rudolph and others was something I watched year after year. Basically the only thing I remember about this one is the Christmas story being told by Linus.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL
I have zero idea which of these adaptations of the Charles Dicken’s classic, about a cranky man who hates Christmas and is visited by three spirits, IS the favorite but the 1984 version with George C. Scott and the 1951 adaptation both have high user ratings.

CHRISTMAS in CONNECTICUT
This is a comedy of errors with Barbara Stanwyck playing a columnist who has fabricated an entire family life living on a farm in Connecticut. Her best-laid fictional life is threatened when her publisher wants her to host him and a war hero during Christmas. While the 1945 is my favorite, there is also a 1992 TV remake that you can digitally purchase on Prime Video.

A CHRISTMAS STORY
This 1980s film is a classic for many! It’s about a family living in the 40s and one of the sons trying to convince everyone that a certain toy would make the best gift.

CHRISTMAS with the CRANKS
Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen feature in this about a couple who decide to skip Christmas and go on a cruise since their adult daughter won’t be returning home for Christmas.

ELF
I watched this one once, laughed and then promptly forgot about it. It’s not a classic for me, but I know so many love this one featuring Will Ferrell as a very unusual elf who decides he wants to find his family.

This is another children’s classic that I re-watched time and again. If you’re nostalgic or you have littles in your house, this one about the loveable jolly soul is (happily) out there to stream.

Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Kate Winslet lead the cast in this charming seasonal film about two women who, struggling with emotional heartbreak, decide to swap their American mansion and small English cottage during the Christmas season. HOLIDAY AFFAIR
Feels like this one is underrated and unappreciated. (Including by me!) I think I’ve only seen it once but it’s cute and follows a price comparison shopper who gets a toy clerk (unknowingly) fired after he shows her kindness.

HOME ALONE
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, but it’s a pop culture favorite about a kid who is left behind when his family leaves for the Christmas holiday. While having fun at first, things go bad when burglars break in!

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!
The 1960s version is, I think, a classic about the Dr. Suess “revenge-seeking” green character who, well, kind of hates and wants to ruin Christmas. I’ve never seen any version of this story, but I’m familiar with it and there is also a 2000 version with Jim Carrey.

I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
Jonathan Taylor Thomas stars in this 90s film about a college kid who gets stranded in the desert and must find his way home. how to stream fan favorite christmas movies

IT HAPPENED on 5TH AVENUE
Another unappreciated season film, this one follows two men who take shelter at the seasonally empty estate of a man who did them both wrong. Only this year they encounter a thief!

IT’S a WONDERFUL LIFE
Any list like this I am sure would include this title. James Stewart and Donna Reed (pre her own TV show days) star in this classic about a man who, feeling downtrodden wishes for a different life only to see a reality where no one, including his wife, Mary and his children, knows him.

LOVE ACTUALLY
A classic for many, but loathed by others, this film has lost some of its luster from the newer generations who find it offensive in some ways (and even its stars are trying to dim the light). It’s a multi character story about different loves and relationships featuring an all-star cast that includes Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Kiera Knightley, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson and many others.

MIRACLE on 34th STREET (1994)
While many adore the 1940s version, I quite like the 90s remake about a woman and her daughter who begin to believe in Santa for the first time. Elizabeth Perkins leads the cast in the 1994 version and Maureen O’Hara in the 1947 adaptation. how to stream fan favorite christmas movies

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL
This one is probably for the kids, but I’m sure some of us adults also love it. It’s a loose re-telling of the Dickens film A Christmas Carol only this time the Muppets are telling us the story.

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION
Many, from what I know, love this one. Chevy Chase leads the cast in this title about a family Christmas that leads to nothing but disaster!

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER
Another childhood classic, this one tells the story of how Rudolph became that famous reindeer we all sing about.

THE SANTA CLAUSE
A fan favorite about a man, played by Tim Allen, who becomes Santa Clause when the man in red has an accident.

WHITE CHRISTMAS
A classic movie (about show biz acts who visit Vermont for the Christmas season and put on the best show they’ve ever done) and a classic song came from this Bing Crosby led film.
