‘ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL,’ SEASON FIVE FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW: THE COZY TV RETURNS

The newest season of a beloved British show returns, and so we are sharing our All Creatures Great and Small season five first impression review, which brings more of its delightfully signature coziness with it.

Returning faces and deeper storylines make a comeback in the fifth season of this beloved British drama, which still gives us cozy stories.

All Creatures Great and Small, Season Five First Impression Review

Being away from his young family and veterinary practice isn’t easy for James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph), but his desire to do everything well makes him a good airman. With his country at war, being in the RAF is a duty he’s proud to step into. When a possible medical complication threatens to cut short his service, his entire perspective shifts. At home, Helen (Rachel Shenton) tries to make the best of life with their young son while staying busy in pursuit of losing her worry for James. In the veterinary practice where they live, Helen has an ally in housekeeper Mrs. Hall (Anna Madeley), a woman who is also trying to find her place of duty.

Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) finds that running the practice without James, and now with his loyal housekeeper occupied, something of a challenge. Still a baby in the house brings everyone joy, which is a bright spot in the house. He’s starting over again with Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose), a book smart graduate who is still learning how to treat patients and how to deal with the people who love their patients. Happy returns, close calls and triumph keep these people connected.

Like any of the episodes or collective seasons from prior years, All Creatures Great and Small season five is quite charming. Like anything else, there are good times and bad times; laughter and tears; moments to cheer and moments to gasp, but through it all, the producers and writers gift us with a story that still creates coziness and wonderful moments for these characters and in turn, us. In today’s story culture, this is a rare thing and I’m grateful this can still exist.

I love, and again, this is a “first impression” viewpoint, this season. It’s charming, as always, and gives us more time with characters we’ve come to love and respect and admire in the best kind of ways. The show has progressed to now being at the start of WWII (and it began prior to this era), which would inevitably mean depression and sorrow. However, the writing has, so far, found ways to handle this with dignity because it acknowledges the heaviness for these characters, but also keeps things heartwarming. It’s all quite splendid and admirable.

Stream, at publication, All Creatures Great and Small, Season Five (next day) on PBS.org, PBS Passport, PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel; or watch the PBS broadcast at 9/8c (check local listings) Sunday nights through February 23rd.

Content: Nothing much to note. Everything stays in line with the former seasons which includes some medical emergencies with the animals (we see a calf being born) or the death of another. From what I’ve seen in the fifth season, there isn’t anything graphic. TV-PG is the rating.
