SOME OF THE BEST REASONS TO GIVE ‘MISS SCARLET’ SEASON FIVE A CHANCE

In its broadcast debut, Miss Scarlet season five airs tonight on PBS! Given its big change, we want to try to convince you that this Masterpiece period drama is still worth watching. Here are some reasons to give Miss Scarlet season five a chance!

It’s almost here. The fifth season of Miss Scarlet makes its broadcast debut on PBS tonight, January 12. Following its fourth season, there was much controversy given the news that a main character was bowing out. Time helped to calm these reactions and now we get the rebrand that continues to follow the adventures of Eliza Scarlet, a character British star Kate Phillips has immortalized on screen. Since there was controversy and conflicts about this next chapter, I’m going to share reasons to give Miss Scarlet season five a chance. Because yes we’ll admit, we did enjoy this one.

I’ve seen (most) of the fifth season already because the season decided to release early to stream if you have the PBS app or the Masterpiece PBS channel on Prime Video. However, the show is now set to have its broadcast bow on PBS. The show has Kate Phillips playing Eliza, a plucky female detective who is finally succeeding in her professional life. Her personal life is hurting though as she wonders what this all means and needs her work to be worth it if that’s all she’s ever to know. There to help her is her enemy-turned-friend-turned-convict, Patrick Nash; her housekeeper, Ivy; and now, the new arrival of a new inspector. The show begins when its fourth season ends, or for all intents and purposes it does, so we’ll share some of our reasons why this one is worth giving a chance.

CLOSING DOORS and RESOLUTION

“Resolution” being first in my list doesn’t fit with my usual alphabetizing my heading list. However, talking about resolution does come first when it comes to a linear timeline and telling this fifth season story. Series four was probably the best of Miss Scarlet and the Duke. While I really missed one character, I also loved that the writing finally moved Eliza and William forward. It’s not the direction probably most of us want to see, but it’s good regardless. If he does ever return, I just hope it’s not to apologize because for this story, his leaving is wise and needed not just for him (and he matters) but also for Eliza, too.

BLAKE

While its former leading man is missed (trust me, I miss him), I also respect William and his reason for leaving. With this said, I do like Blake. His arrival is not only providing viewers (and Eliza) with the banter we love but also a way for us to see Eliza in a new light. We don’t hold her to the same level of consideration as we did with her and William because there isn’t that past history and affection between them.

the COSTUMES

I’m pretty sure I say this about every season, but it does deserve repeating. The costuming is magnificent! reasons to give miss scarlet season five a chance

the EVENT

I want to say more about this EVENT, but I cannot because spoilers. If you’ve watched the show on the PBS app, then you already know, but if you haven’t, well then, now you’ll enjoy this.

IVY

I think Ivy is an underrated character. She’s wonderful and she tells Eliza (or as she calls her Lizzy) how it is. She gets quite a story thread this season; I will say, I did find her decisions and reactions about her personal life a bit annoying in this season. Like Eliza, she seems to be averse to creating a partnership with someone she loves. I do understand that the time period for these women meant that they couldn’t work and love someone, but this is also about women who are accomplished and determined, so that anything they set their minds to can be accomplished. There’s more to a relationship than “giving something up” and if you don’t want a relationship, then you owe it to the other person to tell them. Nonetheless, I still think Ivy is delightful and I love her so much.

NASH reasons to give miss scarlet season five a chance

I’ve never been an ardent fan of Nash, the irritant (of Eliza) turned business partner turned felon. However, surprisingly I do like him in this season. He’s a sounding board for Eliza, even though she doesn’t give him a chance to advise her every time. Still, he’s there and listens, and while he does make a mistake again, Eliza similarly does the same in pursuit of her work.

You can see Miss Scarlet season five on PBS beginning January 12 (it will air through February 16). You can also stream Miss Scarlet now on the PBS app or on the Masterpiece PBS Prime Video channel.
