REASONS WE STILL LOVE ‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’: THE WHIMSICAL MOVIE IS 65 YEARS YOUNG! Sharing a few reasons we still love #SleepingBeauty, the #Disney classic. #MovieAnniversary Share on X

The story may not be a tale as old as time like Beauty and the Beast, but Sleeping Beauty is still charming and lovely. It’s about a girl who, while under a curse, lies sleeping for years upon years before the handsome prince finds her. Of course, it’s also a story that women aren’t supposed to enjoy today. That said, I do still enjoy the film. It’s a fairytale and those are the type of stories that I want to stretch things and tell an impossible fable. So, while it may be “improper,” I think these tales have their place and are still worth enjoying.

We’re celebrating it with our usual silliness by sharing some of the things we best love about Sleeping Beauty.

REASONS WE still LOVE SLEEPING BEAUTY

AURORA

By today’s standards, Aurora wouldn’t be a cool or needed or acceptable heroine. In some ways, this is fair because she does have a cruse for most of the film and therefore we don’t really get to know her. Still, despite this, I think she’s a worthwhile heroine and is certainly someone worthy of being a heroine.

Surprisingly, she’s always someone even the modern girl can relate to. She has dreams or hopes and perspectives or wishes that translate to modern times.

BRAVERY

This film shows and portrays bravery, and it does this in various ways. From the Prince’s noble quest to find Aurora and help her live again to the trip of godmother’s who care for Aurora, there is a good deal of bravery in this story.

the GODMOTHER trio

These women are hilarious, and I love them! From their petty arguments with each other to the fierce and kind protectiveness of Auroa (or Briar Rose!), these three are wonderfully underrated characters.

the KISS

These days the whole rescue with a kiss thing is loathed, and considered obsolete in pop culture. It doesn’t have to suggest “weakness” to be rescued no matter who is doing the rescuing or who is in need of rescuing. There are also many different kinds of strengths. Shows today like to portray the woman (ultimately) doing the rescuing and I’ve seen it work really well and make sense for the story (I just rewatched a show where this is true), and other times it feels like its sole purpose is appeasement. In this, I think the rescue makes sense even with a kiss tying into it. While the romance (according to timelines) doesn’t totally make sense (animation films rarely do), I also “accept” it because this isn’t a saga to take seriously.

the WHIMSY

I think every Disney fairy tale (like Sleeping Beauty) has a sense of whimsy, but there is something about this one that is especially whimsical. (Like the animals trying to cheer their friend up by dressing up or the squirrel bouncing a nut off the heads of the row of animals.) It makes for some pretty animation too even in a film from 1959 by which I mean, the way films use animation has changed drastically since this.

There’s lots of color too, and according to film trivia, the artist took a more modern approach to the animation in this, which was not to the likely of his colleagues. Also part of trivia is the fact that this film did take eight years to produce.

You can stream Sleeping Beauty, at publication, on Disney+
