‘SUITS: LA’ MAKES ATTEMPT TO BRING BACK THE COURTROOM DRAMA

Not a sequel or reboot, Suits: LA is a completely new spin-off esque show that tries to reinvent the popularity of the USA Network show that was Suits.

Suits: LA (2025) TV Show Review

Formerly a prosecutor in New York, years ago Ted Black (Stephen Amell) moved to LA to start something new. He left to escape, but he’s still haunted. His reinvention included starting his own firm. He’s been successful defending wealthy clients, but now, his firm is at a breaking point. In order to save it, he has to adapt, which means a merger. When this plan backfires, he has a choice to make that forces him to tap into things he wants to leave behind. This means plotting his next move won’t be easy…

I underestimated this show. At least by first impressions. It checks the marks on all things soapy drama, secrets, and sleek characters, but there is also something about it that could overcome the soapiness, which I am all for. This is one of those that may confuse some. It comes about six years after the end of the nine season Suits, the show which inspires this. This is also about two years after USA’s Suits had a resurgence with streaming through Netflix. This show, while entertaining, isn’t a sequel or a reboot, but more of a spinoff kind of like the CSI or NCIS franchises set in different locales.

Entertaining is the surface of this show, and I have zero doubt that, same as with its inspiration, this one will get soapy. The drama goes beyond what normal courtroom dramas need, and is more about the dramatics of the lawyers (about the only thing I take that much drama from is Downton Abbey), but I think this one could be fun. There’s setups for backstabbing, and hope for succeeding, too. Do I think it will have the staying power of Aaron Korsh’s first creation? Nope. But it will get attention because of that creation.

Stephen Amell (most recently off his run on CW’s Arrow) features as the lead and he’s good as the same kind of Harvey Spector slick lawyer. If the story wants to reinvent that, well, they did a nice job. However, I’m not sure how the rest of the show will play out and be different enough to work. Plus, the OG show also had Harvey and Donna, a would-be end goal relationship that we wanted so much we delt. Still, the entire cast is good (I like Erica, so far) and I can admit this episode does inspire curiosity.

Stream, at publication, on Peacock or NBC.com; digitally purchase or rent on places like Prime Video

Content: the content is pretty much the same as other courtroom dramas or Korsh’s first show. There is innuendo but nothing else in this episode. (Likely, there will be implied and actual sexual relationships that will likely have hookups now and then. The teaser for future episodes suggests this including a possible same-sex, if this bothers you, relationship.) There is profanity like shit or damn including GD.
