‘GROSSE POINTE GARDEN SOCIETY’ FIRST IMPRESSION: A SOAPY DRAMA ALL ABOUT SECRETS

A new NBC show that is soapy, but also works in humor, Grosse Pointe Garden Society is interesting.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society (2025) TV Show Review

In suburbia, life may seem quiet and normal, but hiding behind the curtains of stunning homes, secrets reside. Some of which take root and grow. Four of these residents are members of a garden club and they include four very different people. There is Birdie (Melissa Fumero), a successful author who believes life owes her something, but she’s hiding under the facade of her put together life. Happily married Alice (AnnaSophia Robb) is trying to fit in as she struggles to teach high school English, and to help, she has her best friend and now single dad, Brett (Ben Rappaport). A perfectionist who is keeper of a seemingly well-run home, there is also Catherine (Aja Naomi King).

All four of these garden club members are hiding… from secrets and each other.

Each of these people hide something but when there is a murder, they are forced to share a secret that if revealed could bury them all in a reality far darker than their respective scandals.

This show is interesting certainly, but it’s also a show that, like some of its peers, is falling into that soapy category. I forgive this in some shows, but this isn’t one that I think will be gripping enough to do the same. This said, I am surprised by how humorous the episode is so open mind and all that. It also does, as is my first impression blush, feel like something that will not have longevity. From what I know, though it’s not a show I watched, Grosse Pointe Garden Society kind of comes across as a “grown up” (at least by the standard of the characters age) Pretty Little Liars concept. Given that the EPs (Jenna Bans, Bill Krebs) are known for Good Girls (which I see reflections of) and Bans has writing credits for Desperate Housewives, this going the dramatic route is no great surprise.

What I do like about this one is seeing someone like AnnaSophia Robb in a lead role. Fun for me since I remember her from Soul Surfer, and also the American Girl film Samantha. Supporting cast also has Nancy Travis (in a very different role from Last Man Standing) and Matthew Davis, too. This episode establishes the characters (at least surface level) and also reveals there IS a victim, but instead of telling us who, it sets up the people who could be the victim. THe question lingers as to the name.

While this may not be something I watch avidly, the humor does surprise and I love that. I think this is something that will serve us and its characters better as a limited show, but time will tell what is yet to come, and who knows, maybe the show will surprise.

Stream, at publication, with Peacock or on NBC.com

Content: one character is having an affair (we see them undress and talk about making a life together). Another married couple makes out half clothed. Briefly, someone is seen straddling a man in a desk chair (it too is an affair). The show is TV-14.
