‘SWEET MAGNOLIAS,’ SEASON FOUR FIRST IMPRESSION: CHANGE FINDS EVERYONE IN NEW YEAR

A viewer favorite for Netflix, today I’m sharing a Sweet Magnolias season four first impression review with those “first impression” (aka episodes one and two) thoughts. Picking up where its third season left off (meaning in its feeling of happiness), we return to Serenity to catch up with our favorite best friends.

It’s been a year since we last toasted with the besties of Serenity. Change has found them all. Recommitting to each other means that Dana Sue and Ronny (Brooke Elliott, Brandon Quinn) are happy. Daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge) is chasing what’s next as she heads towards college. Then there is Ty (Carson Rowland), the best friend she’s had since childhood. Is he going to finally tell her what he feels? Helen (Heather Headley) is trying to navigate a busy life while Erik (Dion Johnstone) and she move on… separately.

In the aftermath of learning her ex is leaving town and behind not just their three children, but two others, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia-Swisher) adjusts. She’s an author and is happy as she pursues her business goals; and personally, as she and Cal (Justin Bruening) continue to deepen their relationship.

These three women learn how to navigate life, succeed in business and raise their children, all while holding on to the lifelong bonds of friendship they share.

Many of the same types of stories play out and up in every season of Sweet Magnolias, but when comparing it to some of its TV show peers, I think this is one of the better ones. It’s anchored (of course) by its friendship, but for a modern show, I think it also does some other things really well. It gives us different scenarios and challenges to cope with, but also gives us plenty of joy, too. For example, this first episode is delightful. It has so much joy and fun and surprise. It’s what makes this show so fun and endearing. According to articles, the unfolding of episode one wasn’t loved by the actors because of the best friend companionship. But I actually think it makes everything more unique and spontaneous and special. Plus, if you realize how nice this is for this character, it’s actually really good and allows said character to make choices that fit them rather than others.

The thing that may annoy viewers the most is the different romances. For me, when a story does have so many love stories, I think its fair and needed to show one happy couple. Present challenges, but also give them and the audience joy. In this show, I think mostly we get this with Maddie and Cal. Their beginning is rough (again, challenges are fine) but I admire how the writers have written them. I’m not sure this will hold, but so far, I think for a modern romance, they are doing them well. They make a choice to stay together and to build something stronger, and while I’m holding judgement until I watch the entirety of season four, I do like them. Helen has always been a favorite character too but her choices in season three were just a little too outside normal for me to love her as much. Still, I think she’ll grow on me in this season.

Flaws and all, good and bad, I do enjoy this Netflix show. First impressions only, but so far Sweet Magnolias season four has a good setup. There are teasers of new romance and all kinds of (hopefully) bright possibilities. Only we likely should expect some tears in the getting there.

Content: there is sensuality and lots of flirting and kisses. So far, this season (first two episodes is what I’ve seen) is on par with prior seasons. The rating is TV-14.
