SOME OF THE BEST PROPOSAL SCENES FROM MOVIES AND TV
On the horizon are two days that make spotlighting some of the best proposal scenes from movies and TV necessary. First is National Proposal Day, followed closely by Valentine’s Day. If this type of content seems familiar to you, well that’s fair since we have written lists like this before both here and when I contributed to other websites. Still, when it comes to fangirling or celebrating favorite things from favorite stories, there doesn’t ever seem to be too much love or celebration for them. This leads us to our list today.
LIST | SEVEN REASONS TO WATCH ‘IT HAD TO BE YOU’ AS IT CELEBRATES 25 YEARS!
SOME OF THE BEST PROPOSAL SCENES FROM MOVIES AND TV. #Romance #Romanticism #MovieProposals #MovieScenes #RomanceScenes Share on XTo be transparent, we are revising part of a list (way back from 2016!) that was once housed on a site I used to contribute to, but we’re also adding to the list and put in the research to find more fun proposal moments to spotlight. We also have a list from March last year with some additional scenes, so take a look at it if you think we’ve neglected some here! Let’s remember and gush over some of our most favorite and best film and TV proposals, because let’s be real, we know we’ve all watched some of our favorites multiple times.
BEST PROPOSAL SCENES from MOVIES and TV
ANDREW and MELANIE from SWEET HOME ALABAMA
Not the ending he was hoping for, but one cannot deny that Andrew’s proposal is big and romantic and flashy, all rolled into one!
Digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
BILL and CONNIE from MRS. WINTERBOURNE
“You know, I always imagined this moment would be like this.” – Bill

This film is quirky and kind of silly in places, but it’s ultimately a feel-good and heartwarming film that makes its viewer smile big. The proposal scene isn’t some Jane Austen type proposal, but it is sweet and real (even awkward, which I think is more real than not) and it’s because of these things that it’s also, weirdly, charming.
Stream, at publication, on Pluto; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
CSABA and IDA from THE COURTSHIP
Adding these two may be unfair since the scene I’m thinking of comes at the end, and I cannot remember if it’s a proposal or just a declaration of love.
Stream, at publication, on Plex, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roki or Tubi; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
DONALD and ANN MARIE from THAT GIRL
I binge watched That Girl last year and found it cute and entertaining. The proposal Ann Marie’s longtime boyfriend (it’s also fun and refreshing to see a relationship last beyond half a season) makes to her is darling and awkward and sweet. It’s one of those situations that, like any good comedy goes in for, doesn’t go well.
Stream, at publication, on Peacock, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roku or Tubi; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
HUGH COLLINS and DOT from MISS FISHER’S MURDER MYSTERIES
Even though I re-watched this show, I cannot remember the specifics of the proposal with these two. However, I know it didn’t go according to plan and yet even with his nerves, Hugh presses on and it all comes out as it should.
Stream, at publication, on Acorn; or digitally purchase on places like Prime Video
JACK CALLAGHAN and LUCY from WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING
“Lucy? I need to ask you a question.” – Jack

Unconventional, yes, but again this is part of what makes the scene sweet and memorable. Plus I’m pretty sure the movie is universally well loved.
Stream, at publication, on Tubi; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
JOHNNY CASH and JUNE CARTER from WALK the LINE
“Now I’ve asked you 40 different ways and it’s time you come up with a fresh answer. . . . I’m asking you to marry me. I love you, June. . . . You’re my best friend. Marry me.” – Johnny Cash

After multiple failed attempts (40!), it cannot be said of Johnny Cash that he took no for an answer. After getting his life together he again proposes to his soulmate in front of an audience. This time, June gives him a “fresh answer.”
Stream, at publication, on Hulu; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
LUKE and ISABEL from STEPMOM
“Even when things are hard and you feel like giving up, you have to hang on to that decision, that choice to love each other. Even if it’s only by a thread. I let that thread break once. This time, it won’t. Will you marry me?” – Luke Harris

With its a-list cast (including a young Jenna Malone and Susan Sarandon), this film is bittersweet but wisely ends in a place of joy. The scene specific to this list involves Luke proposing to his girlfriend, Isabel in a genuine moment, which sets into motion a complicated scenario as she attempts to find her place as a “stepmom.”

SOME OF THE BEST PROPOSAL SCENES FROM MOVIES AND TV. #Romance #Romanticism #MovieProposals #MovieScenes #RomanceScenes Share on XNEIL and BETH from HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU
“I don’t wanna be with anybody else, I just wanna be with Beth.” – Neil

This scene is, again, not fairy-tale like or “big“ in a swoony romantic movie kind of way, but it fits and is more relatable. Commitment-shy Neil rejects proposing to his girlfriend, Beth with whom he’s been in an exclusive relationship for many years. When the idea of losing her shatters his reality, in the sweetest of ways, he shows her how much she means to him with a proposal.
Stream, at publication, on Max; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
NICK and RACHEL from CRAZY RICH AISIANS
We love this scene, right? It’s all kinds of sweet, but also over-the-top big with the mad dash to go after Rachel.
Stream, at publication, on Max; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
PENELOPE and MAX from PENELOPE
“But this isn’t me, the real me is inside here somewhere just waiting to get out and you can make that happen […] Marry me, Max. Marry me.” – Penelope
Adding this one to the list might be the one “misplaced” scene because it’s unusual (and doesn’t end in the most joyous of ways). The scene depicts a desperate Penelope proposing to the only man (Max) her sheltered heart has opened up to. Unfortunately for her, the response is anything but what she wished for. I felt it earned a place because the scene is so well played, and in context, these characters needed this to prod them towards honesty.
Stream, at publication, on Pluto, Prime Video, Roku or Tubi; or digitally rent/purchase on places like Prime Video
WILLIAM and ANNA from NOTTING HILL

This scene isn’t technically a proposal, but the “I’m just a girl…” moment (which is movie lore iconic by now) and its follow-up response is a vulnerable scene asking for commitment, and plus, it does lead to that happy ending, so it feels like breaking the rule to include this scene is OK.

Those are some awesome proposal scenes, Rissi! One of my favorites is the one in Nottinghill. It’s a classic, for sure!
Notting Hill is VERY classic. That scene/quote is, I think, considered one of cinemas greatest or most iconic quotes. It deserves it. :)
