‘THIS TIME NEXT YEAR’ IS A CHARMING BRITISH ROM-COM ABOUT FATE
Released in the U.K. with a delay in releasing in the U.S., This Time Next Year is a sweet movie that finally made its way stateside. Inspired by the novel, of the same name, this is a film I was definitely anxious to see.
This Time Next Year (2024) Film Review
Achieving her goals isn’t easy for Minnie (Sophie Cookson), but she does love the work involved in her company which is to bring savory pies to older clients who need assistance with meals. She loves the part of the job that is helping people. Even with the smart mind and talent of her best friend, Leila (Mandip Gill), she is hopeless at the managing part. She would rather help people than take on anything corporate, even if that pays the bills.
Quinn Hamilton (Lucien Laviscount) is the opposite in every way from Minnie. He’s corporate and does well in his work. But that’s only what he lets everyone see. When Minnie meets Quinn by happenstance, the pair discover they share one very big thing: a birthday. Not just any birthday though, it’s January first and on the cusp of the new year, their mothers were in labor together on NYE where the race is on for the first baby born in the New Year. When Quinn wins, he also gets the name Minnie should have had and instead she gets Minnie Cooper (yes… she knows).
They’re about to discover that fate may have more in store for them.
FILM REVIEW | ‘YOU’RE CORDIALLY INVITED’ TO THE MOST IMPERFECT WEDDING (EVER!)
‘THIS TIME NEXT YEAR’ IS A CHARMING BRITISH ROM-COM ABOUT FATE. Reviewing #ThisTimeNextYear, an adaptation of the #SophieCousens novel. #LucienLaviscount #Romance #RomCom Share on XLuckily for me, which isn’t something I always accomplish, I read This Time Next Year before seeing this. Penned by Sophie Cousens, the book came to my attention because of Instagram, which is where I saw someone hyping up the book. Luckily, when the film made its entrance in the U.S., that was the push I needed to read the book. Both are delightful. This does deviate some from the book, but mostly, it’s in an unbothered kind of way. It’s fun
I like the characters, same as in the book, and I think the actors are well cast in their respective roles. The people cast are different than the idea we have of them based on the book, so there’s one difference. I think for some this will be a big turnoff, but most of the time, it doesn’t bother me and this is another title I can say that about.
Easily I can say, This Time Next Year is a delight from start to end. It brims with charm and the cast do all the right things to inspire this feeling so that it sticks.

Content: There is barely avoided F-word and lesser uses of profanity like sh*t. There is some sexual innuendo and references to sex; some British slang crops up in this vein too. One couple heavily makes out; they take off their clothes in a frantic manner before an interruption stops them. The film is PG-13.
