IT’S ‘BARBIE’ DAY! LET’S CELERBATE THIS ICONIC AND FEMININE HEROINE
On March ninth, it’s National Barbie Day. According to the lore, the history of this day marks the actual birthday of Barbie, one part of the Internet text says that “The history of National Barbie Day is the history of Barbie herself as the day marks her official birthday.” Further down the line, the text says that Barbie made her debut on this day in 1959 at the International Toy Fair hosted in New York. Since it is the special day of this iconic character, we’re looking at some reasons or things to love about Barbie aka our Barbie Day list. From the controversial film, to the doll, let’s celebrate this well-heeled lady.

IT’S ‘BARBIE’ DAY! LET’S CELERBATE THIS ICONIC AND FEMININE HEROINE. Talking #Barbie on this #BarbieDay of 2025! What do you love about this iconic character? #Icon #MargotRobbie Share on XThere isn’t much I know about Barbie as far as her legend or the real reason of her creation. The Interwebs says she was created as the first doll with “adult features,” which is interesting and likely quite true. Beyond this, I also don’t hold nostalgia for the character because I didn’t grow up collecting anything Barbie. I had dolls, some of which were gifts, and others were hand-me-downs, but I think most weren’t official Barbie dolls and were instead dolls like Belle from Beauty and the Beast or another doll I remember having the name Whitney. Let’s have some fun and look at some of the reasons we still love Barbie.
THINGS to LOVE about BARBIE
aka our Barbie Day List
HER CLOSET
This one is obvious. Who wouldn’t want to raid the closet of Barbie. She has some truly fabulous ensemble, especially some of those iconic looks we all know.

HER FEARLESSNESS
In this character we see someone who seems willing to try anything and everything. While this can also be a weakness, there’s a sense of interest too because she’s also excited to experience new things or opportunities. Again admirable, but I think it’s also wise that society and culture recognize that sometimes, no matter who we are, there are limitations to what we can or should do.
HER GLAM
The girl has glam and iconic style. Makes me think of that Taylor Swift song ‘Style.’
HER FEMENINITY
Because she was created in a time when being feminine and wearing pink wasn’t something that was controversial or seen as negative like being a cultural cue that signals someone isn’t smart if they are also girly, I think Barbie tends to be presented as more feminine, no matter the different styles, careers or faces she has. I think this too is perhaps why so many girls have loved her for so many years.
HER STORY
…and when I say her story, I am of course referring to that controversial movie from the summer of 2023. Because no Barbie Day list would be complete without mention of this film. In it, Margot Robbie steps into the role of the “OG Barbie,” with a solid cast surrounding her who play the many different women Barbie has been through the years. In the film, Barbie believes she lives in the perfect world, one where there is zero pain which also means there is no true understanding of joy, only to discover that maybe she doesn’t.

She learns that perhaps living in an isolated place where only one sex gets to make the rules might not be the best way to build her life. Instead, she decides that she wants to face her fear and truly step into the world even with the fear of pain and rejection and sorrow, she’s ready to give living a chance. I admire this about her. She’s willing to look at other perspectives and consider facts, and she comes to realize she can think for herself.
There are of course things I don’t love about the Barbie character, but I’m not here to dive into that. Instead, spotlighting the things I like about the fictional character is way more fun!
