10+ MOVIES TO ADD TO YOUR WATCHLIST JUST FOR FUN OR WITH MOM!

by

When it comes to fun movies, sometimes we just need to watch one about silly things with our girl friends or mothers… or even sometimes by ourselves. At least I know I do sometimes. Because once in a while the only thing that really “helps” is something that will make us silly giggle even if only for two hours. As the day for mom’s approaches, I always find it fun to look up movies that are heralded as movies to watch with mom or try to remember the films I’ve seen that fit that definition in that there’s some sort of mother, child relationship.

LIST | YES I STILL LOVE ‘AUSTENLAND.’ HERE’S EIGHT IMPORTANT REASONS WHY

I don’t know about you, but no matter the day or season, I like a feel good movie. If there’s good connections between characters or heartwarming moments, well, that’s all the better. These films take a look at some of the varying different themes of moms and their kids in various stages of life, and I freely admit, are mostly unusual choices. But sometimes that’s just more fun. Like any theme list we post up around here, we go for variety because we all love something different. Let’s take a look at some of the films I discovered in my searching.

Ps; check out our 2020 Mother’s Day list too!

MOVIES TO WATCH WITH MOM

1: THE ADAM PROJECT

Ok, yes, this one is a stretch. It’s one of the newer Netflix titles about a futuristic man who returns to a timeline in his past in order to try and change an event that cause future catastrophe. If you or your mom is more into sci-fi it’s a really fun flick and features some solid mother and son scenes between Jennifer Garner and her son, played by Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell, both. Stream exclusively on Netflix

The film is TV-14

2: BEAUTIFUL

More of an unusual film, this one looks at a different motherhood perspective. It’s not a top shelf favorite of mine, but I did like it more than I remembered when I re-watched it. Follows a woman obsessed with the beauty pageant circuit and the lengths she goes to in order to be unencumbered and the valuable lessons and gifts she picks up in these more destructive pursuits.

The film is PG-13

3: DEAR FRANKIE

Saw this one years ago and honestly don’t remember much about it. However I do remember it’s heartwarming. The plot follows a mother who writes letters to her son for years, passing them off as letters from his father.

The film is PG-13

4: FREAKY FRIDAY

Sillier than some on the list, but come on. We do love this classic, right? There’s a version from the 70s but the one I grew up watching is the 2003 version with Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Harmon and Disney’s once upon a time star Lindsay Lohan. The plot, as we likely all know, follows a mother and daughter who swap bodies.

The film is PG

5: HEARTBREAKERS

Follows a mother and daughter con team who end up in over their heads with one of their cons. Not a favorite – by any means, this film does (mostly) entertain.

The film is PG-13

6: I COULD NEVER BE YOUR WOMAN

If you are into quirky with a splash of romance, this film follows a woman who falls for a younger man (Paul Rudd), but also central to the story is the relationship she has with her daughter. This one also features a young Saoirse Ronan. movies to watch with mom

The film is PG-13

7: LOVE, SARAH

A British drama that does have a bittersweet start (so steer clear if that’s not your thing), the plot follows a young woman who reconnects with her mother’s estranged mother in the wake of tragedy, and the best friend who comes along with them.

The film is PG-13

8: THE MAP OF TINY PERFECT THINGS

From the perspective of the daughter, this one isn’t a strong mother and daughter bond, visually, but it has a moment or two and it’s really sweet but also sad if that’s not your thing.

The film is PG-13

9: THE MEDDLER

One of those slower moving dramedies, this one features a story about a mother who meddles a bit too much in the life of her daughter.

The film is PG-13

10: MOMS NIGHT OUT

99.9% sure I saw this years ago. It’s from a smaller production company and features Sarah Drew as a harried mother whose night out with girlfriends ends up being a little crazy.

The film is PG

11: THE SECRET: DARE TO DREAM

Not a mother’s film per se, this one follows a widow with three kids who meets a mysterious stranger who just may have more than a passing stranger connection to her family.

The film is PG-13

12: WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

Quirky in many ways, I finally saw this one last year and honestly was surprised by it being pretty good. The title is outrageous (though I get the “why” of it) and the silly birth scenes are present, but there’s various different motherhood journeys that will likely allow many to relate no matter what you’ve gone through.

The film is PG-13

BONUS! These titles aren’t related to mothers or daughters in specific ways, but they’re entertaining if you haven’t seen them or like me, you just enjoy a re-watch now and then.

1: BELLA

More of a pro-life film than most I see, this one is flawed, but has its moments. I started re-watching it this week and forgot that it’s good. Follows the story of a man whose bright future is clipped when he inadvertently ends a life only to later in life meet a woman struggling with thoughts of ending a life. If you want one of those movies to watch with mom that is more emotion, this might be a good one.

2: LIFE AS WE KNOW IT

A charming and funny film about two people who have to step in to raise the daughter of their mutual friends. Again, a bittersweet story but it finds its footing and is quite sweet.

The film is PG-13

3: THE OTHER WOMAN

Nothing to do with mothering, this one is just a funny girl-y movie to watch. There’s some moral questions but the film also demonstrates there’s moral lines it won’t cross, and I respect this; helps us like the characters more, too. The plot is all about a woman who learns the man of her dream has a secret she doesn’t know about.

The film is PG-13

4: THE PRINCESS DIARIES

I mean, this one is really a classic, and when you think about it, there’s lots of themes of mothers and daughters. Of course, the Disney classic tells the story of an awkward teenager who discovers she’s the heir to a throne! The film is G

  1. Oooohhhh! Thanks for this list, Rissi! “I COULD NEVER BE YOUR WOMAN” looks so good! I just added it to my TBW list. I am really looking forward to seeing it! :)

    1. Do you know… I REALLY should re-watch Dear Frankie, Heidi. It’s been YEARS since I saw it but I realized it was a film about a mother and son so I added it. ;)

    1. YES! “Freaky Friday” is just… so much cute. Love it lots and of course, The Adam Project is good too. Really should have saved that one for Father’s Day (and maybe still will) but it does have a good mother-son moment or two. :)
