BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY 25 YEARS LATER AND THE JOY OF THIS ONE
Difficult pill though this is to swallow, we have been privy too, and known Bridget Jones’s Diary for 25 years now. Over two decade later, this character is still charming so many of us, and oddly enough, it’s a character that I shift emotions on. But as it is 25 years later, we are looking back on the legacy (cinematically speaking) of Bridget Jones, and some of the big (and little) things we love about her world.

In the titular role Renee Zellweger brought to life the character and has been playing her now for 25 years! From that first flick Bridget Jones’s Diary through being the center of a (more than one!) love triangle, motherhood and great loss, women have found in this character someone to relate to. I have mixed emotions (based on reading my own words!) about this character, but I am still curious and excited to look back and remember what I love or enjoy about this film.

Adding the titular character as a reason to love this story is perhaps too obvious, but looking back at my own editorial thoughts reveals that I had reservations about this character. But I also only saw this movie (for the first time) a little over a year ago. I watched it, skipped movies two and three (I don’t need that back and forth drama!) and watched the fourth (and presumably final) film Bridget Jones: Mad about the Boy. Likely there was a lot (which is obvious just by reading a synopsis) that happens in those in-between flicks, but in skipping them, I did find that in movie four, Bridget is very likable.
It’s not that she isn’t affable in the first film, but I think she’s matured, grown and changed; the catalyst for some of this is anything by happy. Still, like all of us, she has grown from living life and I think she is more likable. As far as admirable, she had many such qualities in the first film, and I didn’t dislike her, I just had reservations.
COLIN FIRTH
For anyone who grew up watching Firth as Mr. Darcy, the famous Jane Austen hero, seeing him in this is probably a great surprise. Or, to go back even further, some of us may remember his brief role in the 1980s Hallmark production of The Secret Garden. But either way, Firth is no stranger to the leading man role and in this one, he gets to play a second character named Darcy, and suffice to say, I don’t think we are mad about this.
THE FIGHT
Silly though this sequence may be, we also have to acknowledge that this scene is funny. The entire fight between Mark and Daniel is laugh out loud hilarious, and while sometimes these scenes are way too slapstick for me (this one is also), for some reason I do think this one works. It’s comical in a silly way, but also seems fitting for Mark to finally act out this way.
THE HAPPY ENDING
If there anything more lovely in this film than its happy end? I would argue no. It’s perfectly delightful but also has edges of “messy” as we see Bridget race to keep her guy, only we learn he wasn’t really running, but still, it’s a good moment and entirely delightful as we watch it all conclude with the ideal confessions and of course, a kiss, too.
